CAPRI
MARK MASTERS ENSAMBLE/Farewell Walter Dewey Redman: The kind of set that would have made cats like Norman Granz proud, one of the top arrangers gathers a hand picked big band to pay tribute to the various facets of Dewey Redman’s career. There’s so much talent on board here that Matt Wilson had to be content to write the liner notes. There’s a lot of ground to cover here and these pros find the right groove to lock into in order to make this audiobiography flow properly. Certainly a must for anyone that’s ever been touched by this sax man.

NEW YORK ELECTRIC PIANO/King Mystery: An eclectic bunch originally, the core group has expanded to include other players and broaden the sound and the horizons even further. With a punk drummer by way of Pretty Purdie keeping the groove, the rest of the gang falls in and makes a joyful noise. Contemporary jazz with a wonderful high octane edge, this is the stuff you want when you need something sure to provide a new kick.

JANUS/Red Right Return: Pissed off youngsters that have a hard on with everything are at least taking the suburbs back from emo. With punk and metal energy and aggression, this bunch is spreading the word that they are mad as hell and they aren’t going to take it anymore, 2009 style. Hey kids, need a voice to articulate your rage? You know who you are if this is the place. Check it out.

LEONISA ARDIZZONE QUINTET/The Scent of Bitter Almonds: Ardizzone is one of those pure artists that kicks it out for the pure joy of doing so. A vocalist with deep chops, she takes equal delight in bringing something new to chestnuts or just doing something new from a co-hort. With a symphatetic crew backing her up, this is a wonderful date for anyone on the prowl for a new jazz vocalist that brings nothing but the right stuff to the table.

LAST OF THE GREAT MISSISSIPPI DELTA BLUESMEN Live in Dallas: Wow, four cats that are the original blues got together and wailed on stuff they were there for the inception of. Talk about right from the gut! A sizzling performance by a combined 400 years of the blues, these geezers really were there when it happened, and I’m talking stuff like Robert Johnson dieing. With Paul Grupp behind the glass in the first set we’ve noticed from him in quite a while, the sound is as righteous as the players. The stuff on here might be older than dirt, but these guys were doing it when it was news, well before others turned it to clichés. A stone cold must for blues fans of any stripe, this is music from the true vine.

ON TARGET MEDIA GROUP
STRAIGHT NO CHASER/Holiday Spirits: So when one of the best acappella groups not called Take 6 makes a holiday record of all your old faves, you pay attention. Hanging together since they were students at IU, they know how to play off each other in their sleep. Tasty stuff on material you’d have to work to screw up.

GREG DIAMOND/Dancando Com Ale: An up and comer in Latin jazz with the cops to attract a lot of cool friends, Diamond is right on the money with his originals and well chosen covers that don’t often land in gringo ears. A solid set that sure to work well for those with world leaning jazz ears, this is hot stuff that doesn’t disappoint.
