CONCORD
CHRISTIAN SCOTT/Live at Newport:  50 years after Miles Davis recorded live at Newport, one of the harder hitting young men with a horn to come along in a while follows in the masters footsteps with a set that gives it to you really live throughout.  The kind of breakout cat that hit the ground running a few years ago and has become a multi-media threat, Scott blasts, blows and blows you away on his third outing that’s sure to expand his top shelf fan base even more.  If you couldn’t have been there, grab this cd and be glad you’re here.  Hot stuff.

SHOUT! FACTORY
JEFFREY ROSS/No Offense:  Stepping more and more out of the shadows until finally being declared the Roastmaster General, Ross kicks off his first comedy special in his home state of Jersey and let’s the fur fly in the way that shows he ate his Don Rickles records for breakfast instead of Maypo.  Screamingly funny in that no holds barred way, Ross takes the gloves off for some of the most un-pc fun you’ve had in a while.

VIBRANT
KRYSTA YOUNGS/Stories:  With Madonna’s help, Alanis invented angst 90s style 15 years ago.  And now the wheel changes as Youngs takes it upon herself to hit it in post-feminist, pomo style.  Youngs covers a lot of iconography in her presentation so, at first, you really aren’t sure which skin she’s wearing beneath those well honed chops.  There’s something here that is certainly going to speak to today’s pissed off young lady that‘s not afraid to be girly while punching you in the mouth.

DVD SUPPLEMENT
CULT EPICS
HERE IS ALWAYS SOMEWHERE ELSE:  Bas Jan Ader was a way left of center artist that disappeared in the 70s leaving behind a body of work that malcontents always find something new in.  This two disc presentation collects the complete film and video output of Ader along with a docu by fellow artsy ex-pat, Rene Daalder who has been making quite an impact in contemporary circles with those who like to color outside the lines.  Pretty compelling stuff if you like it on the edge from artists that might be out there but are doing more than posturing.

POPULATION 1:  Rene Daalder approaches pop culture here with the eye of a mildly amused foreigner amazed at how we don’t get it.  With a resume that swings from the sublime to the subnormal, Daalder covers the waterfront mightily. Talk about the end of the world as we know it, this is a punk rock send off to all that is American as the empire slowly sinks in the west.  Wild stuff that takes no prisoners and will probably be screened prodigiously at any college where rich kids are still hanging out on their pop’s black card fomenting revolution until the reach co-option.  Hey, it’s just one of those growth curves.

WARNER HOME VIDEO
CLONE WARS:  Blame it on “Family Guy” but now, at long last, “Star Wars” comes to cartoons.  With all the funny names and space stuff in tact, this is “Star Wars” but in cartoon form.  Let’s see if it polarizes the fans.  It’s from Lucas.  You know the drill.
