HARMONIA MUNDI
FAUST-VAN DER ZWART-MELNIKOV/Brahms Horn Trio: With nary a lullaby in ear shot, this set shows a full range of the Brahms’ emotional scale. The lead piece is a naked expression of his inner self, very well played by this trio. Like hard core jazzbos that know how to lay out, they never step on each other’s playing making the meld in such a seamless fashion that it’s an audio excursion. Other pieces look at the Brahms younger days before he made his mighty symphonies while he was testing his wings and writing for pleasure. Over all, a dandy look at music you wouldn’t normally hear by some players that really love their work.

JAZZ PROMO SERVICES
JON LARSEN/Jimmy Carl Black Story: The longest running hipster joke in rock gets a sideways airing out in which Black basically turns this platform into his audiobiography. If you aren’t down with classic Zappa, this whole thing might well be lost on you as some hippie dada trip out, but if you wink and know we’re only in it for the money…. Oy, if the 60s really do come back, this cd will be one of the leading lights of the new revolution. Two discs of this, no less…

MARK PUCCI MEDIA
RICH MAN’S WAR/various: A bunch of front liners from the Ruf stable get together and let you know the rabble is rousing as they pull together a collection blues protest songs letting you know just what’s on their minds. A nice throwback to the 60s for old radicals and young malcontents, we shall overcome my ass. Hard and heavy stuff on the minds of those out of the mainstream.

BLUES CARAVAN-Guitars & Feathers/various: Mixing a sense of humor with some new stuff by the label’s bluesy ladies, two vets and a newcomer go solo and jam together showing the new generation is up to the task. Bringing home the bacon and frying it in a pan is low on the list for these gals, but they will rock your world, blues style. A nice sampler/introduction for those that need it.

NEW EARTH
DEUTER/Atmospheres: So, was Deuter getting into a bar fight and someone told him to take it outside? That’s what he does on his new release as the pianos and strings swirl around some nature for a delightful sounds cape that finds him mixing his music with more for a fun, relaxing experience. Meditative and mysterious but always on point, this is Deuter riding a the top of his skills and making a nice wonder for the inner seeker that wants to chill with something that has some real substance.

TWO FOR THE SHOW MEDIA
MARK WEINSTEIN/Lua E Sol: How do these things come in waves like this? We just got a jazz flute player showing their Brazilian side. Could be worse, we might get a jazz flute player wanting to show their Tyrolean march side. Whatever. Weinstein engages us so there’s no need to worry about what’s going on here. He’s got solid jazzbo credentials having played with cats that don’t mess around where he held his own. Passionate and sure sounding, this is a little too deep for the yuppie tourist but the real jazzbo wanting to feel his international oats will love it. Check it out.
