LISA REEDY PROMOTIONS
ISAAC EVANS/My Journey: A piano man with a love for jazz took the long way around, learning as he went to finally come out with a set that was gestating for 7 years. A labor of love given that extra oomph from the sincerity that went into it, this is a tasty, low key outing that easy to have in the background when you need some welcoming sounds. Well done.

LUNATIC SOUL: Splinter group from the Riverside front man changes the vector but doesn’t fall far from the tree. Still into serious gloom and doom, just this time around without electric guitars, front man Mariusz Duda knows how to keep his underground fans happy and diversity at the same time. Not for the typical Hot Topic mall punk, this has that single minded vision that takes it to the edge.

BUSELLI-WALLARAB JAZZ ORCHESTRA/Where or When: When a contemporary big band hits it out of the park, it’s really a nice thing. BWJO does a lot of the classic stuff, but they play it from the heart and that’s what separates this from a retro/nostalgia thing and a bunch of well intentions kids trying on pork pie hats. They cover a lot of your fave old tunes that haven’t been beaten to death and give it all the sparkle and verve that originally made you feel a little guilty pulling away from your parent’s taste and enjoying early Beatles. A dandy work out that’s a must for genre fans.

ON TARGET MEDIA
DAVID FOSTER & Friends/Hit Man: This cd/dvd package is certainly a fun bet for any mainstream, contemporary pop fans, especially if they are bubbies. This audiobiography is the companion piece to Foster’s printed autobiog but this is less work for fans to enjoy. Recorded in Vegas with an all star line up of people he’s made sound good, this is more intimate that just rounding up his most famous tracks and warming them over once again. Foster is one of those interesting musical characters whose output isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but seems to sell bazillions. If you’re into the stuff he’s made happen over the last 40 years, this is the holiday gift you will appreciate.

CHOPTEETH Afropunk Big Band: A bunch of lefties go through some life changing events, band together for a band, get inspired by Fela Kuti and take it to the bridge for the 21st century. Don’t go thinking this cat and his pals are derivative. They crank out and crank up some first class African dance music that draws from several wells but finds it’s own footing, even when it has to brave new trails. Killer underground stuff that disaffected college kids can enjoy with their world beat elders.

WET COAST
JOANI TAYLOR/In My Own Voice: The Canadian first lady of the jazz ballad goes a highly original and personal route for her latest and her long time fans will not be disappointed. Working out with some long time sidekicks, it’s time for people south of the border to find out what all the hub bub is about. With 38 years of recording behind her, if you know about Krall and Welsman, you owe it to yourself to know about Taylor as well. A first class set throughout, jazz vocal fans are in for a certain treat here.
