COLLECTORS CHOICE (www.ccmusic.com)
REDD FOXX/Foxxadelic (971); Live in Las Vegas (972); Both Sides of (974): Whitey must have really had it in for Redd Foxx in the 60s since they thought he was one of the most dangerous men in America and kept his records underground, sold only in the ghetto on a specialty label, frequently from under the counter in paper wrappers. Huh? By the time these recordings were made, Warners knew he was a profitable find and created a fake black label to sell him under, over ground. The chitlin circuit party record came of age. Is it time or is it reality? These records are still funny, but Foxx doesn’t seem any more dangerous that a street Henny Youngman who tosses in a few curse words every now and then. When bootleg 8 track tape of these sides were making the rounds in the wake of the success of “Sanford & Son”, I thought they were boots of the underground Dootone sides, and it was hard to see what all the hub bub was about even then. Bottom line, Foxx is gone and we miss him. Collectors Choice put out his five Loma/WB albums and you can grab any of them without missing a beat and being sure of a laugh. Much more than a footnote in a well rounded comedy recording collection, this is a sideways look back at an America is isn’t anymore but exists in the hearts of many.
GORGEOUS PR
LUKE MULHOLLAND BAND/Further: The kids continue to take over as this 19 year now has his 4th album out after touring with Bon Jovi and James Cotton and playing a major rib fest. This youngster is one of those cats that things ain’t what they used to be for as he reflects his love for classic rock, delta grooves and all the stuff that has nothing to do with HSM. A sure bet for pissed off kids that want some contemporary stuff of their own and are tired of raiding their parents music shelves, this is what alt.teen is about today.

SUBURBAN NOIZE
KOTTONMOUTH KINGS/Green Album: Rip hoppin major label refugees forget there ever was an overground as they continue to grind out a major catalog with the intensity of other DIY-ers like Ani deFranco, blissfully unaware of how others are making Rome burn around them. High powered with some new guests and a commitment to not letting their energy flag, this is true suburban noize with no apologies. You might not get it, but the kids more than understand. Why do you think they keep buying KK in droves even with no place left to easily buy music anymore? Hot stuff.

PARAMOUNT HOME VIDEO
MIND OF MENCIA Season 4 uncensored: This is a fine example of what we’re talking about when we talk about paperback video. Mencia is a funny, timely cat that relies more on schtick than real ethnicity. Loading the deck with funny iconography, you don’t have to watch the shows at home when you can watch them on your portable and get the stuff basic cable clips out. Very timely takes on stuff you think but would be condemned for saying, particularly you Whitey, it’s contemporary male bonding without the obligatory “Ginger vs. Maryann” drunken fantasies. Mencia continues to make funny grist for the mill, not so much sharpening his axe as he goes along as digging a deeper, comfy groove. Either way, you’ll get a dose of much needed laughs, with a big helping of street in the delivery.

GET SMART (2 disc special edition): In theaters, this was a great movie for a hot afternoon when you wanted to play hooky. It was a perfect example of a movie that wasn’t bad, but just didn’t have what it took to be good, whether it was too many cooks spoiling the broth or a beloved property with too much baggage that shouldn’t have been mishandled. The talent involved is indisputable in their respective games. The outtakes help and bonus scenes are nice for real fans. With the complete TV show coming to DVD for Christmas, this amiable time filler can catch a ride on the back draft for the “Get Smart” freek that also owns “Nude Bomb”, the tv show revival…..
