ARTISTS RECORDING COLLECTIVE
LEE SHAW TRIO/Live in Graz: Ok, she studied with Oscar Peterson, taught piano to John Medeski and worked with every jazzbo you’ve ever collected—and you’ve never heard of this 80 year old little firecracker from Oklahoma who’s now getting her chance to step out of the shadows. This record was precipitated by some appreciative foreigners hosting a local concert and the jazzboette is up for the challenge. Delightfully unpredictable and swinging, she has a load on her fastball and it’s a gas. Also included is a dvd with some live performance and more.

GORGEOUS PR
LUSTRA/What You Need and What You Get: A new example of how up from the underground works. Working the net like another instrument, this crew has gotten movie placements, millions of plays and has gotten a lot farther than they would have in another time and place. Contemporary rock with it’s off kilter moves, this crew makes as many modern moves as any arena rocker. Populist rock that really hit’s the nerve.

DANNY BRILL/Better Late Than Never: It’s an old rock and roll story: kid sees a band in 1971, gets inspired to take up and instrument, gets slapped in the face by the real world and almost 40 years later, finally gets to make the album he always wanted to make with some of his musical heroes on board. He had his head spun by ELP and has Tony Levin guesting here so you know this is some inspired contemporary progressive rock. We’ll never know what would have happened if the real world hadn’t interceded, but the results here and now are yupscale fun for yuppies that want to get their mind off the stock market and get back to the garden.

BILL MORNING/Spaces in Time: Hard working bass ace that’s provided the thump for almost every jazzbo over the last 30 years steps out with his long overdue second album, surrounded by some like minded jazzbo pals that want to stir up a mainstream good time. Simply an hour of first class jazz that anyone with jazz oriented ears will have a gasser with.

SARAH VAUGHAN & WOODY HERMAN & His Orchestra/On the Radio-1963 Live Guard Sessions: This cd is coming out just in time because most of the old timers I know that would go nuts for this kind of rare date are dieing off quickly. Sassy and Herman never recorded together and this radio broadcast for the National Guard is the only extant pairing of the two. Pretty much the grandchild of the V Discs, this set finds them up for the challenge of entertaining the men in uniform with some jumping tunes that swing and hit it. A lot of smoking jazzbos came into their own in one or another of Herman’s big bands and the crew here was right in the pocket. More than just a nice trip down memory lane, this is a cool rarity unearthed.

MAHLER/Das Leid von der Erde: When you’re on a roll, why quit when your ahead? With Michael Thomas at the helm, this series of Mahler recordings has been a best seller as well as being quite decorated and this tenth entry in the series seems slated to share the same happy fate. With Mahler becoming a specialty of Thomas’, the sparks fly and the classical listener is rewarded with a whole new take on some warhorse repertoire. Housed in a deluxe package, this SACD is everything a serious classical fan could want to put the music in the proper perspective. A winning set you can count on.
