BLIND RACCOON
FREE WORLD/From the Bluff:  Memphis’ under the radar jam band is still going strong over 20 years and they still sound like a bunch of white boys taking over Stax after hours.  With Jim Dickinson at the helm and a bunch of contemporary southern jam band lads dropping by, this comes across as a frat boy extravaganza that should be played at all gatherings where white boys do the white boy dance.  Fun stuff that rolls along merrily.

GADFLY
BEPPE GAMBETTA/Rendez-vous:  I don’t know about you, but this is exactly the nuts kind of record we love.  The flat-picking guitar genius decides to make a duet record, but he doesn’t stick to anything in the strict sense of the word.  Pairing up with everyone from Missy Raines to Darrell Scott to Marco Pereira and others, Gambetta pushes the boundaries and does it all without an attitude.  On paper, there’s absolutely nothing here that makes sense, certainly over the course of an album length project, but then you put it on and the magic fills your ears.  A wonderful taste making, bag breaking set that doesn’t take guitar to new places so much as it takes your ears to new places.

GO MEDIA
KJ DENHERT/dal Vivo a Umbria Jazz:  The under the radar superstar takes her act to Umbria for another turn at the festival but brings along a recorder this time to commit the proceedings to byte and further confound her fans.  Kicking it out live giving those that have never experienced it a taste, the genre bender glides through a solid program that will continue to win over new fans.  A winning set for alt.adult ears on the make.

MAXJAZZ
DENA DEROSE/Live at the Jazz Standard V. 2:  Hey, the first set was such a snappy thing, you have to smile that the tape was left running and Derose kept hitting it out of the park.  With a crew of cats that know how to compliment her swinging piano singing, this gang tears it up handily with one of those club dates that make you wish you were there.  Elegant and eloquent but loaded with funk and good vibes, this is some state of the art contemporary jazz vocalizing that should not be missed.

TWO FOR THE SHOW MEDIA
JERRY COSTANZO/Destination Moon:  The divas have been getting all the attention the last few years but here’s a cat that knows how to swing it 50s style and could give Steve Tyrell and few pointers on how to sharpen it up to get his groove back.  Working that tried and true Sinatra/50s vein, Costanzo and his swinging pals know how to grab the Vegas vibe that most of us have heard about but never were old enough to really experience.  It’s not a time piece, just a good time that doesn’t try to recreate but exist in it’s own place bringing some authenticity along for the ride.
1 (Semi Quaver Jazz)

GIOVANNI MOLTONI/3:  An educator at Berklee, this guitar man doesn’t let his day job interfere with his art and you get the feeling he’s got the kind of mind that lets him earn while he learns getting as much out of class as his students do.  A nice set of boundary pushing work, Moltoni likes to get to he heart of the matter in a quick, stylish manner.  A tasty jazz guitar outing throughout that never takes the easy way out while not making itself a challenge to listen to.
