JAZZ PROMO SERVICES
MICHAEL HIGGINS/The Moon & the Dancing Lady: Here we have a guitar man that has studied with Joe Pass and played with Bernadette Peters as well as is a member of Shapes, and he’s hand picked two jazzbos that are part of the lexicon of modern jazz to lend a hand. The result are purely smoking. A mostly original set recorded in a day, this has the old days vibe in spades and there’s nothing about it that doesn’t hit the right notes. Check this out if you have a taste for a jazz guitar trio that knows what’s it’s doing and just wants to let the good times roll. Hot stuff.

LISA REEDY PROMOTIONS
GIAN WIEGNER & GARY BRUNOTTE/About Time: An organ/guitar quartet where the organ takes a bit more of the spotlight while the players show they can play any kind of jazz with the equal kind of aplomb that pulls you in. Clean, straight ahead jazz that has a lot on the ball impressing without relying on razzle dazzle and letting the chops fall where they may. Certainly a good bet for the jazzbo looking for a new kick.

LORI HEHR PUBLIC RELATIONS
MORGLBL/Toons Tunes from the Past: Fans of sounds from the undergrounds should rejoice as two sets from this French fusion trio resurface in this collection. Reaching back to the 90s, these heavy metal jazzbos bow at the varied shrines of Allan Holdsworth and Zappa with other fusion stops meted out along the way. With the addition of unreleased tracks, regrouping in the real world and spreading the word on the road, this stuff might be older than the average college kid this term, but it’s the kind of offbeat stuff that could come pouring out of dorm rooms looking for badges of cool. Nutty stuff that doesn’t believe in rules.

MICHAEL BLOOM MEDIA RELATIONS
FRANK SINATRA/On the Radio-Lucky Strike Lite Up Time Shows 1949-50: Pre Capitol live Sinatra from when he was doing a nightly radio show in the waning days of network radio. Loaded with the kind of songs he was doing in his crooner days and earlier, this could suffice if you don’t know where to begin on his Columbia and RCA years and would rather invest in Capitol and Reprise days. Putting his best foot forward to keep the checks coming from the sponsor for the year and a half these shows ran (had to pay the alimony, don’t cha know?), it’s not quite as dated as you would expect. This collection is certainly a must for Frank whores and a sweet find for those that want to know more about the art of singing.

DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET/On the Radio Live 1956-7: Culled form two live dates that were also broadcast, it’s hard to think of such a square looking guy as being one of the prime movers of west coast cool jazz. This collection brings out more of him than “Take Five” offering a nice snapshot of what hipster jazz was percolating in the mid-50s. Y’know, maybe this cat made as many people take up piano as Beatles did guitar.

RED CAT PUBLICITY
NEW JAZZ COMPOSERS OCTET/Turning Gate: Maybe we should get to know more about the legend of Doris Duke than what cable feeds us since records like this are funded by grants she originally set up. This is some bad ass modern hard bop that swings hard and unrepentantly. Also functioning as Freddie Hubbard’s current backing band, this crew is one of those aggregations where everyone’s mind is functioning in overdrive and you can’t tell who is responsible for raising everyone else’s game. It’s loaded with the delightfully mad kind of jazz that shows the form is alive and well, looking forward with all deliberate speed. Hot stuff.
