CREATIVE SERVICE CO
SPENCER BREWER/Cinematic:  One of those under the radar cats you thought found his way to Narada too late to use them as a platform for his new age ambitions, he’s sold in the millions while nobody was looking.  Here we find him following his passion for film music by coming up with a collection of scores for unmade movies.  A two disc set, it comes in sweetened and unsweetened versions.  With the wealth of first call instrumentalists he rounded up for the sweetened version, you’d have to be nuts not to enjoy it as first rate NAC.  On the unsweetened side, we find he has a real knack for saloon piano, and with Dave McKenna in retirement, Brewer could easily become one of the genres leading lights.  Clearly a top notch set for adult, instrumental fans.

JAZZ PROMO SERVICES
ROGER KELLAWAY/Live at the Jazz Standard:  IPO Records continues to hold itself out as the premiere platform for real players that want to make accessible, non-populist music where they really get the chance to smoke.  Kellaway leads the crew on this double live set recorded over four nights where the gang is modeled on the combos of Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson and the set card is heavy on period work outs from Miles Davis, Ellington and others giving this a MJQ feel more often than not, except it swings harder than they often did.  Everyone on deck here is a pro and Kellaway raises all their games.  Simply supreme, sublime adult jazz for sophisticated tastes and those who with they had some.  Hot stuff throughout that doesn’t disappoint at all.

MARCO GRANADOS/Music of Venezuela:  Ok, gringos, listen up. We don’t; get much Venezuelan music in these parts and if this flute virtuoso is indicative of what they have to offer, it’s time we sent some emissaries down there to bring more back.  Hitting it like a Latin Pete Chrstlieb with a flute, Granados can play licks at 200 mph that are more than just a fusillade of notes.  Vacation music with bite, this is what you wish the cds you  bought in gift shops sounded like when you go them home and the sun and fun were long left behind in the airport.  It’s an ear opener that’s sure to enchant and delight.

LEONARDO E. M. CIOGLIA/Contos:  Brazilian jazz from another angle comes across very nicely with this bass ace in charge.  Solidly an adult listening date, Cioglia knows how to deliver the goods in a pleasing way.  The kind of cat that makes you feel like always making him welcome, there’s a lot going on here and all of it good.  Check it out.

LOTOS NILE
AUTUMN/Velvet Sky:  Take some confessional 70s singer/songwriter vibe, filter it through 90s angst and leaven it with some  contemporary Texas songwriting sisters and you get a voice for contemporary college girls that are more into reality than reality shows.  With a folk/Americana wash bringing the sound into today, Autumn sneaks up on you, makes her case and wanders away with your attention and desire for some more.  A nice solid set from a songwriter on the rise and coming up from the margins.

MICHAEL BLOOM MEDIA RELATIONS
KATHLEEN GRACE BAND/Mirror:  Charting a new route that your won’t be able to pigeon hole straight away, Grace is a jazzy vocalist that mines a Rickie Lee Jones groove with a smoother voice and veers it into classic singer/songwriter territory.  A smart and polished presentation, Grace has loads on the ball and the open eared looking for a new kick are sure to find it right off here.
