OUR FIRST CONTEST!!!!!!!
Our pals at ABC Studios noticed that we just don’t run enough contests around here and generously provided us with two copies of “Eli Stone-The First Season” on DVD to feed the fire and have our first contest.  Ok, so now we have the prizes, what hoops will we make you jump through to get them?  How about a good old fashioned essay contest?  In 50 words or less, tell us why you should win a copy of Eli Stone.  Entries must be received by Sept 13 to be considered.  Neatness counts.  Judgment of the judges is entirely subjective.  Every bit of legal mumbo jumbo that ever been written about contests that covers our butts is incorporated by reference whether you’ve ever read it or not.  Now start submitting!

ANZIC
ELI DEGIBRI TRIO/Live at Louis 649:  Sax man sidekick of contemporary jazz greats fires up an organ trio for a hot little date that just let’s the skronk fly on a set heavy on originals that doesn’t follow the Jimmy Smith/Jimmy McGriff format for the form but delivers some dandy stuff on it’s own.  This ain’t about some greasy B3 pumping, this is a mix of art, chops and cool vibes that come together to raise the roof on it’s own terms.  A solid listening date for people that like their jazz best when sitting down.

OBLIQSOUND
GILFEMA/+2:  Jazzbos from around the globe converge in New York to fuse their own world jazz fusion that is certainly an international gumbo with futuristic proportions.  With a lot of intuitive playing mixing vibes from thier individual homelands, this is something that would sound like it came from ECM’s ecumenical Mediterranean division, if such a thing were out there.  Dig?  Check it out if you ride this tip.

ROCK PAPER SCISSORS
SHAHROKH YADEGARI/Green Memories:  Kind of a trance recording that let’s you hear Ali Azam in ways you’ve never heard her before as the prime mover on this set basically threw her in the studio and let her improvise as she saw fit since he was just going to transmute the sounds anyway.  Powered by a Persian that wants to play tribute to the environment and important writers of the past, this is the kind of college kid set for college kids that like to find deep things in simple statements.

SUBURBAN NOIZE
UNWRITTEN LAW/Live and Lawless:  Underground SoCal pop/punkers that have sold millions of records while seemingly no one was looking, bring forth a live cd/dvd combo package that brings everyone up to date on the ground they’ve covered since first assaulting America’s underground.  Best of all, they use the cd cover as a platform to let all the little mall punks who’ll see this at Hot Topic know it’s ok to wear skirts that let their butts hang out while having their hands cuffed behind their backs.  Lordy, the Suicide Girls of tomorrow have to come from somewhere and it’s the rec rooms of Republican suburbia that will issue forth.  SoCal proves it knows how to mine this sound loudly and proudly.

TRUE NORTH
CATHERINE MacLELLAN/Church Bell Blues:  With the kind of laconic delivery that will make casual listeners think this is another Norah Jones wannabe, listeners that think like that will be missing out on a cool singer/songwriter that’s a beneficiary of the return to lo fi.  A confessional singer/songwriter not in the Joni Mitchell vein, MacLellan is a product of today and has feelingsthat are universal and timeless but observation s that could only have come about after being the first generation raised on the Internet.  Certainly a sterling debut from a new talent to be reckoned with that’s here to stay.

THE JOHN HENRYS/Sweet as the Grain:  Country rock is alive and well in Canada as this crew have grown up on more than just Flying Burrito Brothers learning their lessons well in the laid back arts of sounding like you are from California by way of Hill Country.  Recalling all your fave underachievers that flew under Eagles and their penumbra in the 70s, this bunch is a load of fun.  Playing by the rules but not afraid to bend them, youngsters tired of living on reissues have something new to rally around here.
