SAVOY
JIM BRICKMAN/Unspoken:  Brickman totally solo is almost a classical, chamber music experience and a good look at what a solid instrumentalist he really is as there’s nothing here to lean on.  Some piano players fall apart in this kind of setting as their music takes on a tinkly tinkly quality but Brickman plays powerfully with sure fingers that romance a keyboard the way he romances an audience.  A warm, charming set very crisply recorded that speaks directly to you in an up close and personal way, this is the kind of set that will have his rabid fans out trying to win over new converts.  If you appreciate hits kind of music, save yourself the head ache and beat them at their own game so you can enjoy it without the prothelizing.  Top shelf stuff throughout.

DVD SUPPLEMENT
BUENA VISTA HOME ENTERTAINMENT
GREY’S ANATOMY  Complete Fourth Season:  Since we’re only a week into Sarah Palin’s pistol packing mama feminism, it’s hard to tell what effect it will have on Meredith Grey’s whiny bitch feminism.  While the show suffered from the writer’s strike, the DVD makes it up with a load of extras and extended episodes.  While it’s still the front running evening soap, where will they go now that everything has fallen apart and has begun to be put back together?  Season four certainly had more than it’s share of nutty elements and offbeat combinations as relationships were mixed and sexualities questioned, on screen.  All told, it’s another example of why season DVDs are replacing books as literature on many home book shelves.

JAZZ ICONS/Sonny Rollins (119011);  Cannonball Adderley (119009);  Rahsaan Roland Kirk (119008);  Bill Evans (119013);  Lionel Hampton (119012);  Oscar Peterson (119010); Nina Simone (119014):  As this series of European jazz concerts enters it’s third cycle of releases, the accent shifts from depth to breadth as we move beyond the most mass market artists to the stuff of a more jazz purist nature.  The sub-accent of this release is on the associates of Orrin Keepnews as we get some prime year stuff from Sonny Rollins, Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans, giving a nice look at the breadth of talent one producer can put under his wing.  Recorded before appreciative European audiences that kvelled being in the presence of these august personages, these performances that give the fan something he’s never had access to on record is once again a real delight.  With Simone in full civil rights mode, Adderley swinging with Zawinul in tow, Peterson kicking it out with a trio of leaders and the others doing their things in fine form, you know what to get the jazzbo on your Christmas list if you want to treat them to something special.  Looking and sounding top notch all the way, you’re safe getting any or all of these titles as there’s nothing here that will let you down.

PARAMOUNT HOME VIDEO
MEDIUM The Fourth Season:  Alls well that ends well, at least for now for prime time’s favorite spooky bitch and her husband.  After being made pariahs at the end of season three, the end of season four find them in the bucks once again, having good friends in high places once again and rid of some back stabbing bitches that were throwing speed bumps in front of Medium faster than she could even envision them.  A perfect domestic dramedy from hell, Patricia Arquette leads the cast into each weekly drama with an unassuming aplomb that’s nothing short of brilliant.  Watch this with your favorite spooky bitch and steal looks out of the corner of your eye to see how she’s reacting.  It could save you from living through the dark side of a “Bewitched” existence.

CSI MIAMI The Sixth Season:  Did the most popular show in the world actually have to resort to a revamp of the ‘who shot J. R.?’ cliff hanger to bring people back for the new season?  Well, it was a nice way to cap off a season that was full of twists and turns showing that Jerry Bruckheimer may even be more on top of his game than Dick Wolf, Steve Bocheco, David Kelley and the others when it comes to playing the franchise show game to win.  A crisp, new mini-movie each week, this show’s season keeps you on the edge of your seat, much more so without commercials and station breaks.  Almost strong enough to be a stand alone collectable even if you aren’t into the series, this is some heady stuff that cop show fans will feel is a must have.  Check it out.
