BLACK LODGE
SLIMFIT/Make It Worse: Cowpunk was a nice diversion that never really caught fire a generation ago, and it might not catch a fire this time around either but at least it’s got some good practitioners working in it’s favor. They might not be taking it as seriously as the forbearers did, but even if they are approaching the sound with a pomo smirk, they are intent on delivering a good time along the way.
(Don’t You Hate Pants?)
BLIND RACCOON
GRAVELROAD/Shot the Devil: A nice dose of alt.blues as informed by Mississippi Fred McDowell as it is any contemporary stuff. Blues for the new suburban generation looking for some crazy new sounds that come from that places where you hear voices from.

MASSIVE MUSIC
PNUMA TRIO/Character: Kids that have grown up with electronics take it for granted and natural as they forge a look at their brave new world. Lots of grooves, lots of bass and Moog and lots of space for your head to sink into it. Wild, unbridled stuff that takes it to the limit and shows these comers to have a bright future.

ON TARGET MEDIA
JIMMY DEMERS/Dream a Little: Background vocalist that has backed up everyone you’ve ever bought goes for the male vocalist bombast, even if he turns the Bolton histrionics down a notch. Kind of a low key return to 80s AC aimed at soccer moms that have no place to buy their tunes now that Starbucks has pimped them out.

PITOM: If you thought Matisyahu was an unlikely event, wrap your head around this dose of self-described ‘punkassjewjazz’ that is one of the most genre bending/mix mastered releases we’ve heard in quite some time. Over the top, completely nuts and still flowing from the roots of Jewish culture, this is what you want to listen to when you are really out there. The label owner calls it a new addition to the legacy of Radical Jewish Culture. I guess the test will be if we hear it pouring out of the dorm hallways of ASU this winter. Noize for good Jewish boiz?

TWO FOR THE SHOW MEDIA
RANDY KLEIN/The Flowing: Solo piano fans can count on getting a kick out of this improviser that has a real feel for being in the moments. Recorded in one session with the tape just getting one pass, he makes the most of the hot second every time out and does a nice job of capturing the uncatchable. Not experimental and not pedestrian, there’s something here for tickle the ear of the genre fan for sure.

WJF
TIM KUHL/Ghost: Another member of the Brooklyn jazz underground surfaces as drummer Kuhl shows what he’s been woodsheding the last three years. A smart, forward looking set that takes jazz to the next stage for contemporary ears that want something new and juicy to enjoy.
