APPLESEED
PETE SEEGER/At 89:  Back when Seeger was hanging out with Paul Winter, he claimed he was making his last album.  Then he started hanging out at Appleseed where albums were made about him and around him.  Now at 89 years old, he’s sort of going back on his word.  This disc doesn’t really feel like an album in any traditional sense making it come across more like a recording of an oratorio of his life and feelings.  Spunkier here than he even gives himself credit for, Seeger loves being in front of a mic again and delivers a commensurate performance.  Certainly a late in life valentine to his fans, he has earned  the right to deliver any material in any way he sees fit.  The real fans are sure to respond accordingly.  This is the kind of set that defies both category and criticism.

JAZZ PROMO SERVICES
DENISE DONATELLI/What Lies Within:  A swinging jazz vocalist with a great voice wants to do something a little different so she looks up Geoff Keezer who in turn thinks this is a great time to hit a fast ball out of the park.   Setting her up with a great bunch of straight ahead session cats,  the two of them cook up a date that looks like just another chick singer dipping her toes in the classic song bag.  If your ears are working you’ll hear this is anything but.  Certainly a highly tasty vocal date, everyone here has a lot on the ball and you can hear it loud and clear.  Powered by a solid, powerful voice, this is a date that vocal fans should make an effort not to miss.

RESONANCE
TONINHO HORTO/To Jobim With Love:  10 years ago there was a pretty tasty Jobim tribute set called “A Twist of Jobim”.  This set comes with a sticker calling it the finest Jobim tribute record.  Why would it merit that?  Well on the cover we get the girl from Ipanema entering Christina’s world for a pretty nice graphic and in the grooves we get a first-class crop of All-Stars playing their hearts out. A mighty fine collection of Brazilian music bottomed by can’t miss material, even though we’ve been to this well many times before, this set has something new to deliver.  Absolutely great music particularly for keeping the summer going.

CHRISTIAN HOWES/Heartfelt:  A hard charging post-bop bop violinist with chops to spare pairs up with Roger Kellaway for softly romantic set that is anything but easy listening.  Having honed his chops by working with anyone and everyone, Howes puts a lot of feeling and depth into his playing giving it a very up-close and personal feel.  Certainly a welcome date for the open eared on the prowl for a high octane new kick.

SHOUT! FACTORY
HOT CLUB OF COWTOWN/Best of:    A delightful, fatly tracked collection of the swing trio’s work for Hightone, this sets serves up  solid, contemporary takes on Western swing and related jazz styles.  Flowing nicely through its 20 tracks, you get a fine overview of this hard-working crew and the fun they were spreading around Austin.  Just what the doctor ordered when you need something to help you kick up your heels.
