DIVERSIONS
ANJA GERMAN/(piano) Haydn, Schubert, Chopin:  There was once a time when we were up to our eyeballs in hot, young, Asian chicks that knew how to really work a violin.  Times have changed.  The new flood seems to be hot, young, Slovenian chicks that are born to play piano.  German, already a well decorated, young, award winner, delivers the goods in fine style on this solo extravaganza.  Played with the power of sounding like an entire orchestra by herself, German powers a delightful program that must be heard to be believed.  Simply an exquisite performance classical piano fans will want to be the first on the block to know about so they can claim bragging rights.

CLAIFORNIA GUITAR TRIO/Echoes:  One thing this gang likes to do is defy expectations, and they’ve been doing such a good job of that for so long, there’s no reason to expect them to stop doing it now.  With a fat guest list rounding things out, they do a bunch of fan faves that range from Beethoven to Lynyrd Skynyrd with stops at Queen and Mike Oldfield along the way.  You already know this a bunch of wired up pros that lets nothing get between them and their strings and their efforts to deliver genre busting work every time out.  Old fans will enjoy the drill and new fans will feel welcome right from jump.

NICK PAGLIARI/Please and Thank You:  A story teller with the full range of Tennessee music in his palette, Pagliari is coming up the hard way in these new times but fighting the good fight by getting recognition in high profile soundtracks.  With that special melding of acoustic guitar and Memphis soul at it’s core, he has a knack for alt.adult under his belt and will connect big with his audience once we figure out who is going to pick up the slack for Starbucks deceased music enterprise.  A smart comer with a lot on the ball, Pagliari is proof there’s still plenty of good music out there no matter how the naysayers bray.

GLENN WHITE/Sacred Machines:  There’s a sax playing jazzbo that’s one of those cats whose  done everything with everybody.  Playing with much more skronk than an educator should be allowed to have, White is one of those cats that has the chops to play progressive jazz and mainstream soul with equal style.  While you can certainly hear the echoes of a Dave Holland group going on here White never shies away from adding his own special sauce and keeping the proceedings his own.  You can tell right away this is a highly creative cat with an ear for exploration.  A sure bet for people that like to keep pushing boundaries.

DIRTY HEADS/Any Port in a Storm:  A bunch of reggae, hip-hopping, alt.rocking surfer dudes, this a bunch headed into the studio with just about every base covered.  With Ashlee Simpson’s producer, the Beastie Boys mixer, Billy Preston on keyboards, a bunch of cool other cats and a bunch of first-rate touring experience, this bunch knows how to reach the urban and suburban kid whose ears exists somewhere in that rap/metal gulf.  Tightly produced in the pocket throughout, this set lands squarely on what passes for top 40 today.

  1. From one skronky jazzbo to another, thank you so much!
