JIMMY WITHERSPOON featuring Robben Ford - Live at the 1972 Monterey Jazz Festival: When the series was launched last year to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the festival, there was such a wealth of material to choose from that the label had to launch with a veritable Mount Rushmore of a selection. This time out, now that the splash has been made, the powers that be turn it back to the real jazz fans. With 50 years of performances and material from every great player that has been, you can dig in anywhere and not make a mistake. This year’s collection shows a wide ranging, well-rounded selection of material. The overviews of Tjader and Brubeck allow for some mighty great cherry picking that showcases great side men and material as well as the leaders. The Horn collection comes from when her comeback was in full swing. Puente was timeless as always tearing it up with his Latin jazz big band swing. Witherspoon in ‘72 was going through fertile period. Blakey in ‘72 was leading a great bunch for this performance. This is a diverse enough batch of releases that there’s something for everyone even if one person wouldn’t grab the whole bunch. Even if not everything is to your taste, the one thing you can be sure of is that there’s not a stinker in the bunch. All material is previously unreleased. This is a mighty fine jazz picnic for the mainstream jazz fan to feast at.

FAMILY TIES The Fourth Season: Anyone who thought ”Family Ties” jumped the shark during the fourth season just doesn’t understand down the middle family comedies. This was never supposed to be the stuff of Pulitzer Prize winnings, this was simply a nice show NBC was hoping would help pull the network out of the dumper. Season four found the two older Keaton kids both finding love, some of it appropriate, some of it inappropriate, but all of it geared toward getting either a warm or comic response from the audience. And of course, just to make sure the parents never got a moment’s rest, there was the little matter of the newborn to deal with. All told, this inside out look at the generation gap, a generation removed, was a hit with the fans and continues to stand up nicely as a light family comedy today. It’s hard to believe, 1982 was such a faraway place and time.
