HEAD’S UP
SMV/Thunder: The geeks in the chat rooms have been yammering about this for 15 years and it looks like the gods of the geeks have finally delivered. This trio date of bass aces Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, and Victor Wooten is loaded with everything that the geeks thought it should have. With so much killer bass playing flying through the air on this set, the title is almost something of an understatement. This is one of those dates that’s one of a kind but you hope it isn’t and that more will come. Anyone with a jones for modern and contemporary jazz bass will be in seventh heaven once the light hits the byte.
JAMIE GUYDEN
JOHN ELLISON/Back: Before Grand Funk could serve up a massive watered down hit with “Some Kind of Wonderful”, soul singer Ellison wrote and performed it and made it his one hit that was his ticket. This new set is interesting on many levels. It’s a contemporary soul set that you can tell had some money spent on it, was lavished with some care and was made by people truly interested in making a good record. You shouldn’t confuse this with the cheesy kind of stuff that budget and offbeat labels do and call a soul revival set. This is Ellison working in the moment and working it well. If it reminds you of anything, it’s kind of like pre-disco Miami soul, quite a nice vibe to revisit. Hopefully, this quality outing will set the pattern for future soul revival sets to come since those that really want cheese can always get some fondue.

WARNER HOME VIDEO
GET SMART’S BRUCE AND LLOYD OUT OF CONTROL: Direct to video takes a new turn with a movie that’s described as a parallel story to the current theatrical release of “Get Smart“. The two tech goofballs that are Maxwell Smart’s loyal sidekicks get into their own nutty adventure as they go searching for some stolen technology. It’s the kind of humor that passes for humor in the age of hedge fund funded pictures. In a lot of ways, this nutty little side job is better than the picture it sprang from. Running along the lines of pictures like “Harold and Kumar“, this quasi-stoner funfest will be an amiable time filler for movie fans that know what they’re showing up for.
