BLIND RACCOON
JON JUSTICE/The Rebound: Midway through his 20s, we have a white boy here that feels and has a feel for the blues. Not the down the middle kind, the kind you get from a suburbanite with Chicago roots that wants to make sure you’re having a good a time as him. They love his energy and passion in Cincinnati and with some road work and YouTubes, the rest of the world should feel the vibe as well. Hot, hard hitting stuff that’s filled with the raw energy that makes this seem fully formed on arrival. Hard to ignore and hard not to enjoy.

STOMU YAMASHTA/Floating Music-Man From the East: The music on this twofer was so far ahead of the curve that it took forward thinkers like David Bowie four years to catch up to it and figure out what was going on. Coming at a time when prog didn’t know what hit it, getting blindsided by this world/jazz/fusion at a time when it didn’t really exist, this was progressive music for progressive minds. Somehow, it resists being dated even more than 30 years later. Remastered to deliver sound you never heard from your old vinyl, this man from the east continues to lay down impenetrable mysteries in density of sound and fury. Wild stuff that world beaters that never got it the first time out will want to make up for lost time getting the chance to immerse themselves now. Still hot stuff. And always original.

JULIE FOWLIS/Cuilidh: A spiritual daughter of someone like Peggy Seeger, this Scottish lass digs deep for songs that are way off the charts from way off to the side of the Gaelic songbook. With the charm of a kindergarten teacher that really cares about the kids, Fowlis weaves her magic spell quite nicely and makes the kind of music you would never seek out and certainly woundn’t be thinking about if there wasn’t a performer like her behind it all. As Monty Python would say: And now for something completely different—but certainly in a very good way (we added the end part ).

SIDESTEPPER/Buena Vibra Sound System: Time to come up from the underground a touch as this Brit dj does his Afro-Columbia fusion thing and comes with a bunch of unreleased jams that will have you riding the super hip tip once you get into this infectious action. Electrorootsdance music that is loaded with that kind of original vibe that keeps things tasty, cutting edge tastes will want to be on the tip here.

PHIL CHRISTIE/Rearview Mirror: Back in the heydays of James Taylor and Jackson Browne, there were second tier singer/songwriters that a lot of people liked more that were highly influential and very talented but just didn’t have that something that put them over the top. Christie is in the mold of those musical soldiers that felt more like a pal than an unreachable star, who didn’t drop the hits but left you with something more lasting. Think comparing Fred Neil to James Taylor. With some highly talented pals that know the ropes bringing home the sound, Christie’s tales of every day life are sure to ring a bell when you are looking for some meaty songwriting you can get into. It may not be vintage Dylan, but there’s noting wrong with vintage John Batdorf.
