DL MEDIA
GRACE KELLY-LEE KONITZ/Gracefullee:  She has to be the Rachel Barton of jazz sax if she’s 16 and they’re calling her the next Bird.  With a track record that reads with the child prodigy intensity of a Rachel Barton, Kelly fits the stereotype of the Asian overachiever by blowing up a storm with her mentor as well as leaving a resume in her wake most pros twice her age would be envious of.  But it doesn’t end there.  Her crew on this date is Russ Malone, Rufus Reid and Matt Wilson, and she’s not letting them coast or humor her.  The set card pulls from all quadrants and everyone can be proud of this day’s work.  A tasty find and one of the times you genuinely want to be able to say you were the first on your block.  Hot stuff throughout.

MARTEZ MUSIC
LEROY BELL/A Change is Coming:  The classic 70’s r&b songwriter has reinvented himself as a singer/songwriter type and continues to serve up compelling music even if he doesn’t have the backing of the industry or family connections to serve him any more.  Making the kind of music that’s going to have him welcome where ever he goes, this is the post-Hollywood kind of stuff that either makes you or breaks you as you try to soldier on.  A nice set of music without limits that you may well have already been exposed to in the rising non-traditional outlets, it’s hard to put down if you want something with a core of old time substance.

POUNCE MARKETING
MR. FISH/Soft Serve Assault:  Neo-Dadaists fresh out of high school that are a bunch of unruly chaps in the Zappa tradition and write songs like “Hillbilly Death Grip” for movies like “Bonnie and Clyde vs. Dracula” show up to make you go as nuts as they are.  Music without boundaries, but not in a world beat way, this is subversive stuff for kids of all ages that want to rock out while doing the spazz dance.  It’s from the heartland,  and even in this age of the deconstruction of everything as we know it, we probably didn’t know what was lurking in the corn fields of fly over country.  Listen to it with your heartland ears turned to 11.

TESTA DURA
QUIMBOMBO/Conga Electrica:  Led by a rocker that got bit by the Latin/Carib music bug, this new set from this hard charging New York based/world oriented crew will blow your ears wide open.  A savory gumbo that keep the caliente muy, they take music rooted in what you got a taste from with Buena Vista Social Club and mix it with a wide ranging Latin/Brazilian/Afro/Carib vibe that doesn’t end.  Mixing some area classics with originals, there’s something here for any aficionado to latch on to a go along for the rest of the ride.  As tasty and organic as it gets, this is essential summer music to keep the party going.

ZATCHUBILLY MUSIC
KELLEIGH McKENZIE/Chances:  Has the banjo playing woman that doesn’t play bluegrass replaced the bass playing chick as the new archetype?  We’ve been getting a fair share of these strumming ladies lately and one thing that’s a common thread is these ladies know their ax.  Now, with the banjo being a throwback to the Civil War era…could this be the sly revenge of Yoko Ono being a prophecy that came true?  We’ll leave that to the political blogs.  At least until they start reviewing records.  McKenzie impresses.  More of a rock singer/songwriter that a back porch momma with a baby on her hip doing the down home thing, she’s got rural roots by way of New York and her songs reflect this well traveled world view.  Coming from the heart at all times, this is the real destination for the pomo ears looking for something to love in a post Alanis world.  Prepare for a delightful surprise that’ll take you by surprise.
