PAUL BLEY/About Time:  One of the most important piano players of the last half century steps into the solo spotlight for an improv tour de force.  The cat can play anything and has played everything and this is far from being the last word we’re about to hear from him.  Simply a must for dedicated jazz fans that want it as pure as possible from an undeniable piano voice.

DAVID MURRAY-MAL WALDRON/Silence:  Digging in the crates we find this date recorded in 2001 a year before Waldron died.  A sax/piano duet set, this is a spiritual descendant of the free jazz kind of stuff that sounded like it was recorded in someone’s basement in the 50’s where the claustrophobia of the recording was used like an extra man on the court.  Want to hear how it sounds when two simpatico cats find the middle ground to really let it blow?  This is the place.

GEORG BREINSCHMID & Friends/Wein Bleibt Krk:  Unless you have some deep Austrian roots, there’s some word play afoot here that is clever to the locals but will be totally lost on you, so let’s just move along to the sound of music being the universal language, shall we?  A bass ace with deep area roots serves up a local flavored and inspired date that is a Balkan/Austrian fusion for those with a jazz/world bent in that direction.  With elements of classical as well as gypsy jazz running through it, this is a fun diversion that veers between bold ethnic statements and good humor.  Open eared NPR types will know the drill and respond accordingly.

AL FOSTER QUARTET/Love Peace & Jazz:  From young lion backing Miles to elder statesman turning out young lions of his own, Foster has been around the horn in jazz and the drummer is not going gently into that good night.  His first new recording in a dozen years, this being a live set, he showcases his back pages, and along the way, this generous drummer gives everybody on board some.  Don’t show up if you are expecting some old guy doing a ‘and then I played‘ riff, this is the real deal.  A straight ahead set from a progressive guy that simply enjoys kicking the jams and wants to share that joy with you.

ANNE PHILLIPS/Ballet Time:  The real deal about ‘new internet journalism’ is that you have to get the hits.  If you want to draw attention to something, you can say something like “What’s hotter than a naked picture of Sasha Grey doing her Johnny Cash imitation?” and sit back and watch the hits from people hitting the cache button when that line comes up on their Google search.  In the last minute, Phillips probably just got more exposure than she has in her whole career.  A background MVP, just from the friends that turned up to help her on this duet album, you know she must be someone special.  A delightfully simple date, this is a set of piano/vocal duets that really cooks in it’s own elegance.  Totally a sophisticated, up market feeling set, this is a great find for when you are looking for that mood enhancing, classy date that brings the boite home.

EG KIGHT/It’s Hot in Here:  This Georgia blues babe has blazed such a trail over the last decade that if you haven’t gotten familiar with her from her indie work, you’ve been missing the boat and now have the chance to make up for lost time.  Making her own way, this way has included a boatload of recognition from fans, the industry and other players.  With more soul that a white girl should have, Kight kicks ass.  An all original set, the title is a real understatement.
