BROOKES CO
EDWIN McCAIN/Nobody’s Fault but Mine:  One of those fun busman’s holiday sets where a best selling blues rocker gets the chance to work it out ton the classics with the classic players in tow.  An oldies set that might be off center for his fans, but not really since he’s always dipped his toe in these waters anyway.  Powered by his love of the core material, McCain goes back to the classic soul and R&B contemporary classics and does the right thing time and again.  When you’re looking for that analog feeling in a digital world, McCain knows how to cut to the chase righteously.

LIVE/various:  This package road show of label stalwarts actually shows there’s a lot of life left in new age/NAC even if the standard bearer companies have gone by the wayside leaving feisty indies to show that it’s no chore to pick up the slack.  Grouping Johannes Linstead, David Arkenstone, Nicholas Gunn and Loren Gold into a  classically formatted road show, genre fans don’t have to mutter they still like new age.  Played with an encompassing adult music sound, this crew plays with no dust on them and certainly lets adult ears have something to perk up about.  Packaged with a DVD of the show, this multi media package is a great entertainment for adults with neglected ears looking for a new kick.

JAMES GERALDEN/Tender and Blue:  Right on the heels of us giving props to reissues by Lorez Alexandria and Nat Adderley comes a new set that’s a throw back to days like that but also a touch off kilter enough to give props to Sammeleh and Duke along the way.  Such is the influence of the gaping maw of cable tv and Ipods.  Geralden knows what he likes and doesn’t bother with delineations if they get in the way of a good time.  Working with the stripped down jazz combo sound of the 50s and 60s, this pleasing jazz/blues vocalist isn’t breaking new ground, isn’t going retro and isn’t trying to be something he’s not.  He’s simply presenting some entertaining stuff that has particular meaning to him and is sure to impart a good time a long the way if you dig this sound.  Essentially, a really smart jazz vocal set for smart ears.

MOONBOUND/Confession and Release:  So why should you care about this new head trip music from  the inner reaches of outer space?  Well, how about because it’s a King Crimson roll off set and KC has enough loyal fans to make this make an impression.  From the fevered mind of Europroducer Fabio Trentini comes this well textured outing with a lot of real music along the way with the electornics.  The current vision of where prog is headed, the diehards and the newbies have a nice focal point here for new runs of intergalactic space trots to be taken at will.  A fun ride for genre fans.

MARIA MULDAUR/Yes We can:  Taking a break from her blues roots to embrace her beatnik roots, Muldaur steps up for peace and rounds up a bunch of like minded old hippies, radicals, feminists and young malcontents to send the message to give peace a chance, but she says it without John Lennon and enlists the words of Garth Brooks instead.  With a graying middle class as pissed off these days as the typical college kid, breaking this out on satellite radio could really skew the outcome of the future as people everywhere feeling like they have nothing will hear this and realize they have nothing to lose.  This is the kind of set that could bring the 60s back again, with guests Joan Baez and Odetta leading the way.  Talk about a contemporary soundtrack for cross generational quality time.
