HYPERION
MARTIN ROSCOE/Nielsen-Complete Piano Music:  Carl Nielsen is a piano composer not too well known on these shores but Martin Roscoe is out to rectify that situation by making Nielsen his cause celebre.  A delightful two disc set of chamber flavored piano miniatures, Nielsen is clearly in good hands as Roscoe presents a lovingly played program that gives the light works and the serious pieces an equal footing of grace.  A dandy find for those out of a new sound.

ROBERT B. PARKER (read by Titus Welliver):  A continuation of the character you met in “Appaloosa”, Parker let’s his Spenser variation deal with the lawless old West with all the attributes you know and love in Spenser and all the dialog and crisp writing you know and love from Parker.  With a less violent conclusion than you might want and expect from Parker, it’s a satisfying tale from a new series that appears to be taking wing.  The franchise seems to be growing in a fine direction.

WALT DISNEY HOME VIDEO
JUNGLE BOOK 2:  Sometimes you just can’t improve upon the original.  I never knew why they called this “Jungle Book 2” when they should have called it “Jungle Book 2.0” since it’s essentially a remake of the grand original with just a few hiccups.  Things is, even though it didn’t need to be remade, it didn’t hurt, it’s a nice update with contemporary talents involved, even if , well, how can you replace Louis Prima and Phil Harris?  Fun, family stuff that will always ring a bell with kids of all ages, it doesn’t supplant the original but it’s a nice adjunct.  And, it reprises “Bear Necessities”.

WARNER HOME VIDEO
10,000 BC:  No Raquel Welch in a fur bikini?  Hmm, it’s the spiritual update.  No Ellie Idol in a fur bikini?  The cat behind “Independence Day” and other mind boggled recent cgi extravaganzas shows what happens when D&D players get to run wild in Hollywood.  With the sensibilities of some Wally Wood prehistoric freak out, this tale of the real olden days is just right for anyone that’s grown side ways from Cheech and Chong and is looking for an incomprehensible take on Ray Harryhausen.  One of those crazy entertainments that just makes you throw up your hands and say, ‘yeah, it’s only a movie”.
