EMI CLASSICS
INGRID FLITER/Chopin: Fliter has made her mark in the classical indie world for a while now, but on this first trip up to the majors, she knows how to make the most of it. After showing she knows her way around Chopin in the past, she opts for an all Chopin program that has enough variety to let her really show her wares in top form. A first call pianist, Fliter is simply the whole package. With looks that lead you to think she might coast on them, once she hits the keys, the sonic painting takes over the visuals. Certainly the next in line for major stardom, Fliter’s sense and style make this a set any classical fan won’t want to miss and will want to spread the word. First class throughout.
DIVINE ART
MADELEINE MITCHELL/Violin Songs: Do you have adult ears a little tired of new age but too intimidated by the classics to made the jump? Have we got a violin player for you! If you aren’t familiar with Mitchell, do a search and believe the blurbs, believe the recommendations. Mitchell is one of the best things to happen to violin, classical or otherwise. With a tremendous touch and wonderful style, this is gentle, caressing music that will blow you away. Covering some lightly familiar classics and taking you into some rare performances, Mitchell and her accompanists play so seamlessly and gracefully that you can’t “hear” the playing as it comes across as so natural. Simply a great recording. Check it out.

FUTURAMA-The Beast With a Billion Backs: In the old days when a show got cancelled and it got a semi-reprieve to come back as a movie of the week, it was good for the fans. Now that a show like that can come back as a direct to vid, it’s great for the fans. The overlords have learned not to screw with the creative process since the fans directly know what they are getting into. Futurama is still PG13, but it’s hands off all the way as the gang is back with all the snide stuff you could want. Since it’s not out for a month yet and since we’re preaching to the choir, we won’t give out any spoilers, but this second in a series of four feature length episodes of the show kind of picks up where the “Bender” kick off episode ended and the laughs go from there. Trust me, fans will not be disappointed and a good time will be had by all (of the shows fans).
PARAMOUNT HOME VIDEO
COMEDY CENTRAL’S HOME GROWN UNCENSORED: A network has finally thrown itself a greatest hits reel as Comedy Central does a round up of a crop of it’s top shows to push the DVD (not that Chappell needs it) and the shows. Funny stuff all around and if you don’t know any of the shows on board here, this is a good sampler. Omnibus enough to have something for everyone even if it turns out it’s not everything for everyone, this makes it seem like a good laugh isn’t hard to find—and that’s the way it is when you get it served up on a plate. Contemporary comedy fans, check it out.
