HEAD’S UP
INCOGNITO/Tales From the Beach: The crew turns up the acid jazz vibe on this set that was recorded around the eastern hemisphere and has an upbeat vibe running throughout it. More a concept than a band at this point, the gel is pulled in the right direction for some progressive action that never gets too outside the lines. A nice workout for contemporary jazz tastes.
PS CLASSICS
ADDING MACHINE/world premiere recording: So, to all you malcontent whippersnappers that think you invented rage against the machine, here comes a musical based on a 1923 work about the dehumanization of the person, all over an accountant being replaced by an adding machine. Obviously updated to today’s sensibilities, it gives off an aura of being trapped in an 80s music vid, without excessive hair or Michael Jackson. Certainly one of those works made to make you think, with nods to Kafka, Lang and other film school darlings that will never fade away as long as there are pissed off college kids looking for the meaning of life, college lexicon has a new entry that future generations are sure to carry forward. This is a deep work not cut out for anyone just looking for a good time at the theater.
CATERED AFFAIR/original Broadway cast recording: Looks like Harvey Fierstein is mad as his mom, so he channels his energy in a positive way and powered it toward a Tony as he recreates the 1956 pic about mother/daughter tensions that mount as a wedding nears. Nicely cast, well written and loaded with emotion that’s sure to push your buttons, this is a meaty set piece that all the 20 somethings that hate their moms will be dragging their significant others to the theater to see. In spite of all the so there-ing, Faith Prince really digs into her role and makes it rise above garden variety angst.
KERRY BUTLER/Faith, Trust & Pixie Dust: Here’s a set built around playing to your strengths. The newest Broadway babe who has made her bones by powering stage adaptations of movies to success turns her talents to the Disney songbook and tackles a wide swath of material that has tent poles to bring you in an other pieces that you can believe were made to order for her, even if they weren’t. Loaded with enough pixie dust to charm the hardest cynic, this big voiced entertainer infused the Disney tunes with the magic they need to stand tall. A killer vocal outing.
CAPATHIA JENKINS & LOUIS ROSEN/One Ounce of Truth: An interesting fusion of musician and singer as they join forces to give voice to the words of Nikki Giovanni. Recently blessed with the high sign from Oprah, the long time well loved poet may be ready for a move to the stratosphere with the rocket fuel on board here.
