KOPAESTHETICS
STEVE RAMSDELL/Looking For…:  Here’s a local Chicago cat that strums a mighty fine jazz guitar as well as writes and leads like a real pro.  This is one of those fun dates that flies in under the radar and digs in hard.  Joined by some other local lights, Ramsdell is too hot a cat to keep his light under a barrel for much longer.  Finding that sweet spot where hard charging playing meets with easy charm, this is a solid find for ears on the prowl for a new jazz guitarist that pulls all the right strings.

LISA REEDY PROMOTIONS
SONGS FROM SUNDAY MORNING v. 1:  It looks like some dumb gift shop quickie but it’s really a skillful, contemporary Christian music set with a boatload of Grammy winners and other decorated musicians on board, even if working as part of an ensemble.  Taking sacred music and giving it a Latin/smooth jazz vibe, there’s something here that grabs you from left field, almost like listening to something like Sacred Steel or some other similarly situated unexpected treat.  It don’t bother us if Christian’s want to get hip.

ROCK PAPER SCISSORS
YUSA/Haiku:  Now that things are changing in Cuba, it looks like the reign of Desi Arnaz music is coming to an end as the new generation that’s been bubbling underneath is starting to come to the fore.  Like a third world country that never had phones and jumps right in to cel phones, so it goes with Cuban music.  With an urban vibe that could be at home in any urban center, this is certainly new music for a new day in which the sound is stretching it’s wings and artists are trying things on for size.  A revolution you can enjoy with getting your head blown off, that’s a pretty good prospect.  Check it out.

DVD SUPPLEMENT
KARPEL GROUP-PARAMOUNT HOME VIDEO/MTV
THE ANIMATION SHOW V. 3:  The first rate showcase for the best animation around continues with another volume, another tour and another round of applause.  If you are a cartoon fan, there’s only so much of the classic  to go around.  Luckily, collections like this give fans something new to obsess over.  A solid set that works well within it’s omnibus format as there’s something here for everyone and no one should turn away disappointed.

WARNER HOME VIDEO
DARFUR NOW:  So, just when you think doofuses star in pics like “Oceans 11”, the leads of it band together and make a first class docu about a war torn country that needs more than help.  Told from several different points of view, if you think movies should have a message, this docu is right up your alley.  Certainly the kind of hard hitting docu that gets tongues wagging.
