DECCA
CELTIC THUNDER: Pretty funny calling this one for the ladies as “Celtic Women” was pretty much of a chick thing in the first place, but the producer of “Celtic Woman” pulls his version of an Il Divo with a bunch of guys herded up under the label of Thunder. Well, gosh darn, of course it’s on a familiar tack but is well done and anyone that still wants some real music will be paying to download this long after Ashley Dupre’s download price has gone back down to nil. No matter what twists and turns the biz takes, well produced Celtic music like this will always have an audience.

KURT ROSENWINKEL/The Remedy: I was all set to have that special geeky EBay collectable as the first batch of these had to be recalled because the goof at the pressing plant spelling the ax man’s name wrong on the spine. Mistake copies were free for the asking if you didn’t mind the slip up but the damn email server was down and I couldn’t get my mooch on. Have to settle for just liking the music. That’s the easy part. Now free to call his own game, Rosenwinkel comes with a double live set that brings populist jazz back to the people and out of the ivory towers. Playing from his career and doing it form the heart, this is right in line with cool and landmark live recordings from the Village Vanguard in days gone by. The vibe here makes it seem like a sure thing that artist/fan communication in jazz is coming to a new level of intimacy. The boy is spot on in his playing and writing and if you liked him before, you’ll really like him uncut. Check it out.

TAYLOR EIGSTI/Let it Come to You: Second set from one of the field of young lions Concord fielded a few years that showed some of the most promise finds him continuing to deliver. In his 6th set over all, the young piano man has a well rounded crew behind him and he’s really looking like more than just a comer. Delightful set that moves and grooves in a mighty way, Eigsti not only plays up a storm, but he seems poised to really start taking things by storm. Hot stuff.

GUST SPENOS QUARTET/Swing Theory: The new patrons of jazz seem to be doctors with some time, money and desire on their hands, and what’s so bad about that? Spenos is the latest doctor that’s in the mood to write a check to hangout with some real jazzbos and let the good times roll, and he has the chops for this to be more than a busman’s holiday will the pros just laughing up their sleeves. The set card is familiar so everyone gets to jump in without reservation and swing. It’s fun, it doesn’t try to be more than fun, the good doctor probably won’t be taking jobs away from hard working jazzbos that need the money and it’s probably only a matter of time before this set makes it’s way west and he starts blowing with Denny Zeitlin.
