HEAVY HITTER
SPYDER BABY/Let Us Prey: Punk metal’s second coming is spear headed by a cat whose demo grabbed Al Jourganson’s attention and the snowball took it’s journey through hell from there. A hard hitting set that leaves no metal unsmudged, you can be pretty sure that this is gong to make a run for the roses as the new sound of the disaffected suburbs.

FELIPE SALLES/South American Suite: As much as we love Jobim, we have our ears open to find what the rest of Brazilian music has to offer us. Here we have an original cat who has Hermeto Pascoal sitting in his shoulder, whispering in his ear. Of curse, this isn’t about tribute or homage, Salles goes his own way quite nicely. A sax man that has his ears wide open, this is a cat that will turn you on to something new and wonderful. A really tasty set that was conceived in art but goes the distance from your brains to your feet with a nice easy stride.

BETTY BUCKLEY/Quintessence: Working out with her long time jazz gang, Kenny Werner’s trio, Buckley gives her cabaret side that extra oomph that separates her from the weepy, sob sisters. Buckley shows that she really does think life is a cabaret and infuses all her song choices with a knowing grace that makes this first class adult pop throughout. A tasty outing that works.
