BLIND RACCOON
HONEYBOY EDWARDS/Roamin & Ramblin:  He’s in his 90s, he was Robert Johnson’s sidekick and he made the journey from the Delta to Chicago all the while criss crossing the south with what would be the cream of Chess’ urban blues revolution.  The cat’s been through the war a few times but he’s still playing with the snap and verve of someone that’s not just going through the motions.  Quite a hale blues set that certainly has it’s roots in the past but is not intended to be a museum piece downloaded from the Smithsonian website.  Solid stuff for people that like traditional blues served hot.

TWO FOR THE SHOW MEDIA
JAMES SILBERSTEIN/Express Lane:  So what is there to really say here? Killer big apple jazzbo guitarist rounds up some first call pals and sets sail for a solid session that any jazz guitar fan should love.  On the money throughout with a sound and fury that echoes the greats that have come before him while adding his own colors and tones, this is simply one that should be hanging around your Ipod for those times you want a reliable date to let your ears sink into.  Never less than totally satisfying.

ELLI FORDYCE/Something Still Cool:  Talk about back in the day, Fordyce used to pal around with Bobby Darin.  If she wants to make a back in the day album, just get out of her way.  Casting herself in a classic jazz vocal mode with a bunch of largely cool school back in the day tunes, this recalls an era from when ‘diva’ didn’t mean spoiled brat–at least in public.  Equal parts classy, sassy and soulful, jazz vocal fans with a taste for a lite but real journey through the past will have a good time here.

MUSIC CITY NEWS
JON MICHAELS/I Hear a Clock:  Sure, he seems like the mild mannered musical side kick on a cooking show, but he’s a cool cat that has mastered the art of easy listening music that doesn’t make you want to shoot out your eardrums.  A pleasing, affable tunesmith that just wants to provide an audio oasis, Michaels throws one right down the middle for the stressed housewife that needs a break but just can’t take any more guided mediation or cheezy synth new age.  It’s hard to make it look this easy in an often disrespected genre.
