BRIAN MOLNAR/Feelin’ Out of Time: Ah, they can call what Molnar does New York City Americana but what it really is seems more like the bastard child of 60’s Washington Square folk. With an over riding theme that the future ain’t what it used to be, Molnar writes and sings a pretty good urban folk tale from start to finish. With musical chops to back up his writing chops, this cat delivers the goods in a way that follows the dotted line from Woody to Dylan to Springsteen before he was a mass market magazine cover boy. Organic without a speck of Whole Foods in the mix.

OSWALD’S GHOST: The Kennedy assassination continues to fascinate history buffs and this new look at that historical moment is a fine way to fill their conspiracy loving sweet teeth. Starting with the Zapruder film and going way beyond, with a lot of new, updated material and lots of previously unseen material, history buffs can spend hours of obsessive fun fine tooth combing this presentation. With PBS and BBC double teaming this, the controversy has probably been fueled for another 45 years.

THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD: We all know this as a kid’s song, but do we really know the story behind the story? There’s some serious cool western action happening sub-rosa and this Jesse James bio is right up there leading the pack. Contrary to the conventional wisdom that westerns don’t happen any more, this character piece, well driven by the two leads, is gripping in the same way a pic like “Cobb” was. It’s a little too easy to call something a stand out in a very small field, but this look at the last days of James is a stand out as a pic in general. with the snap and verve that makes small pics seem bigger than they are, this outlaw tale of twisted redemption is a real part and parcel of American history, told as it should be—without the candy coating.

THE BRAVE ONE: Jodie Foster is looking mighty fine for a woman reaching a certain age, and that’s one of the fine points of this inside out version of “Death Wish“, but then, there’s always been something about babes with guns that works in pics, no? Out for vigilante justice in New York after her fiancé gets wasted right in front of her and she barely escapes the same fate, this is the pic for everyone that thought she was wasted in the Hannibal pics and wanted to see her turn things on their heads. One word of caution though, this is really a babe someone would kill for. Solid urban action pic with everyone on both sides of the lens pulling their weight.
