KARI ON PRODUCTIONS
MELANI L. SKYBELL/Just a Chase Away:  Jazzy piano lady has the right vibe to grab the Norah Jones audience without trodding the same Norah Jones ground.  With the right touch and style to make lite jazz that isn’t fuzak or worse, Skybell delivers an easy going time that’s nice to have around.  A more polished date than a indy release should be, jazzbos looking for something new are pretty sure to enjoy.

MASSIVE MUSIC
AARON MITCHUM/Where I Am:  Contemporary folk from an itinerant picker that moves around, takes it in and gives that element of wandering to his tunes.  Introspective stuff that doesn’t make your ears bleed, Mitchum hones his lyrics nicely, not wasting time or syllables and keeping you involved to hear what comes next.  A tasty set that bodes well for future outings as well.

ROCK PAPER SCISSORS
APHRODESIA/Lagos by Bus:  It’s almost like a stoner tall tale.  SF world beat crew decides to go to a hellhole country that inspires their music and to hang with Femi Kuti.  They come away better musicians for it.  And it’s all true.  After taking a trip to the cradle of Afrobeat, Aphrodesia finds their sound sharpened by adding world view to their world view.  Mixing in jazz and highlife, this is a spunky, high octane world beat party set that has nothing to do with the Caribbean, even if they do spike their sound with some AfroCuban elements.  Fun stuff that will lively you up.

DVD SUPPLEMENT
MVD
NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND/Greatest Hits Live:  It’s got “Mr. Bojangles”, but after that, you might get arguments from casual fans.  Certainly, it’s the casino version of their hits and until something comes along that’s better than watching paint dry, this is the best look going at this pre-Americana crew that’s gone from being good natured hippies that were trying hard to elder statesmen in only 40 short years.  There must have been a good reason they’ve lasted this long.  Also, where else are you going to get a gander at Stella Parton these days.  She’s on board here too.

PARAMOUNT HOME VIDEO
CARMENT ELECTRA/Aerobic Striptease Vegas Strip (85254);  Striptease in the Bedroom (85253):  Who’d have thought there would be two more entries in this series?  Electra shows us once more that even pushing 40, she is still everyone’s fave trophy wife.  Even though these are basically two new workout discs, she brings the moves from Vegas to the bedroom with all the bumps and grinds in tact.  Fun to watch, certainly more fun to watch than to actually do, unless you are a trophy wife in training, it makes us wonder what Jane Fonda hath wrought?  Glad you shorties don’t remember the women’s movement.  We agree that this is the stuff that’s empowering.  Go for it.
