AUDIOBOOK SUPPLEMENT
HARPER AUDIO
CLIVE BARKER (read by Doug Bradley)/Mister B. Gone: Barker returns to the horror story as a devil trapped in the first manuscript ever printed begs you to release him as he gives you the history of good and evil. Could this devil be an evil movie producer in disguise? Barker gets in touch with his devilish side in this unabridged telling that might just have you believing this is the real thing.
KATHLEEN WOODIWISS (read by Nanthe Elbrick)/Everlasting: Talk about a Harlequin Romance gone nuts! Woodiwiss mixes “Beauty and the Beast” with “Cinderella”, adds in some gothic romance stuff with some old South patina and viola, a genre buster of a tale of romance denied worthy of “Romeo & Juliet” without the poison. Whew. A must for fans of escapist romance tomes that know how to go the distance.
DVD SUPPLEMENT
PARAMOUNT HOME VIDEO
ARCTIC TALE: Yeah, you wouldn’t be out of line calling this “March of the Polar Bears” since it’s from the same people, covers the same kind of story and sends pretty much the same message, but we like polar bears more than we like penguins. Even though Starbucks got their butts handed to them in the mismarketing of this pic, it’s great for the kids to watch because they’ll get so involved with the story about the polar bear/walrus childhood pals story that they’ll soak up the global warming message without knowing it. Nanu is a cutie anyway and if he knew about Knut, he’d probably trade his mother’s love for the soft life–I mean they are animals and they are concerned with survival. It sends a message without he help of Western Union and it’s got good bears. This makes it a pretty aces docu as far as we’re concerned.
BEST OF CRANK YANKERS: Pulling 60 episodes from the various seasons, the cable phoney phone call series helmed by Jimmy Kimmel and his pals wraps it all up in one package for a video version of a bathroom book. All the characters get a star turn here, even if you want to kill that yay guy rather than see him ever again. Fun mishagos that appeals to the stoner in everyone.
WARNER HOME VIDEO
HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX: Well, we were going to call this fifth entry in the series Star Wars for dorks, but somehow, the irony would have been lost. Harry and the gang are back, the special effects are there and the battle between good and evil is on. Who will win? Nail biter, huh? Hitting the stores just in time to be the last minute, block buster family media gift of choice, this review proof pic has it all on the ball, especially for holiday release. Cynical types that don’t really care about the movie might want to hang around Wal-Mart just to watch shoppers kill each other to make sure they get a copy. I mean, it’s not like Warners can’t just make more. Whether you’re a fan or an anti-fan overdosed on the hype there’s no denying they do a first class, bang up job in presenting this pic from the cast to the effects to all the details you don’t even care about. A well done package every step of the way.
