1-UP PR
SHALINI/Surface and the Shine:  Mitch Easter and Don Dixon know you’re jonesing for some power pop so they have hooked up younger fellow traveler Shalini for a return to the Marti Jones glory days.  Fun stuff that recalls the girl rock of Go-Gos and Bangles as filtered through shag rock, this hits the mark and fills the sweet tooth in fine style.

HOUSTONS/Still:  Back from some time off for regrouping a woodsheding, this crew has reformatted themselves and serves up some tasty indie rock as filtered through Velvet Underground and other kaleidoscopes that need to be brought back into focus.  A nice, solid set with a great vibe that pings several chords in several places, it’s deceptively fun and tasty in ways that really don’t even hit you in the first few listenings.  Check it out.

AUDIOBOOK SUPPLEMENT
HARPER AUDIO
CAL THOMAS & BOB BECKEL (read by Richard Rohan)/Common Ground:  Perhaps they are becoming the Abbott & Costello of political commentary, but it’s a nice break from the shrill ranting that doesn’t do anything other than show who can yell louder.  Placing a call for the return of civility, it’s a nice notion, it probably won’t happen, but it gives them a Southern gentleman patina in their harkening back to a calmer time as things get more fast paced.  It won’t change the world and it probably won’t be heeded, but it does put forth some pleasant notions for a world running amok.

JANET EVANOVICH (read by C.J. Critt)/Motor Mouth: In case you want to go through some back pages with Evanovich, she’s got one that’s right up your alley. An entry in her “Barnaby ” series, she’s quickly running several brand names that are all delivering the goods. A solid thriller that will never have you confusing her with Jessica Fletcher, Evanovich gets down to business in short order and keeps your headphones on throughout. Certainly another new chart topper for her.

JANET EVANOVICH (read by C.J. Critt)/Wife for Hire:  Reaching back to 1990 for some chick lit that was right in line with shows like “Ned & Stacy”, the inside out version of “Pretty Woman” finds a rascal looking for a rent-a-wife to help his career.  Of course, it’s all business until she realizes she can change him and is in love with him.  Primo audio escapism for hard charging gals that still believe in the happy ending.

DVD SUPPLEMENT
SEVERIN FILMS
MALABIMBA (The Malicious Whore) (119); SATAN’S BABY DOLL (120):  Reviewed together because, even though they were made just a few years apart,  “Satan’s Baby Doll” is  a remake of “Malabimba”.  If you aren’t a fan of Eurosleeze, these titles might not ring a bell for you, but if you are, these DVD debuts are going right to the top of your Christmas wish list, even if they might not be available at Best Buy or Fye.  You thought Linda Blair had a wild puberty in “Exorcist”?  She ain’t got nothing on the two girls making their moves through hell here.  Anyone raised on contemporary porn might not find the shock value of these artifacts from another fairly recent era shocking, but at the time, such was the stuff of 800 pound elephants in the living room.  A crazed teen plunges her family into realms of depravity only hinted at in the “Poison Ivy” series.  Loaded with gore, nudity and the kind of blasphemy only foreigners really find shocking, this is great fun to fill that sleaze sweet tooth.
