BOXHOLDER
BOBBY FEW/Lights & Shadows:  Really old school progressive/free jazz piano cat goes the solo piano route in Paris that was just made to be enjoyed with intellectual wine and cheese and appropriate head nodding.  A solid dose of art with a capital A, eggheads need to get off to jazz too which can be done in this set of funk for smarty pantses.  Yeah, I’m talking to you, college boy.

BROOKES COMPANY
KATRINA CARLSON/Here & Now:  This new crop of distaff singer/songwriters that are making their bones on TV scores with records as an after thought can be a dicey proposition since so many of these shows want drippy music.  Carlson has that something extra that makes you sorry she not making records first.  With a mortal lock on the adult contemporary format, Carlson captures the best of the 70’s singer/songwriter vibe which might explain how she keeps hanging out with rockers of that era.  A nice tasty set that’s pretty heavy on the girlfriend music vibe but you won’t feel bad playing it in the car if there’s no game on and you want points with your babe.  Well done.

CROWS FEET PRODUCTIONS
JASON RING/Patchwork:  This guy is so good you want to hate him but why bother?  In the spirit of every organic sound you ever loved from Leo Kottke to the early NAC line up at Rounder in the 80s before the sound had a name, Ring can play anything and seemingly everything, instruments and styles.  From Takoma to Tompkins Square, he seems to have soaked it all up and did something to make it all his own.  Cleaning up on awards at every competition he looks at, this cat is the next barn burner to be on the look out for.  Been wondering where the next Chet Atkins etc is going to come from?  Look no further.  This is some killer real music.

BRAM TCHAIKOVSKY/Strange Man Changed Man:  One of the original bunch of Radar Records signings that included Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello, this bunch of pub rockers adapted to a big sound and delivered some big new wave hits off this set despite being recorded on a shoe string and released into the gaping maw of a bad record biz recession.  Finally seeing light of day on cd, it’s one of the high spots of an era that make you wonder what took so long.  A wonderfully hard hitting set that still is loaded with punch and verve putting a bunch of today’s whippersnappers to shame.

RED CAT PUBLICITY
3 COHENS/Braid:  A cool mix of 50s blowing date and 70s jungle fusion, these sibs that like instruments that come with mouthpieces blow up a sonic storm that surprises and delights with it’s energy, surprises and chops.  A wild ride that blows your ears open in fine style, these young hitters playing at the top of their games is a flat out treat.  There’s nothing here you can’t immediately wrap your ears around.
