CROWS FEET PRODUCTIONS
RANDY McALLISTER/Dope Slap Soup:  They must think pretty highly of this Texas white blues cat in Oz where he was nominated for an Oz Grammy in a category where his co-nominees were Clapton and Dylan, as in Eric and Bob.  A next generation Delbert McClinton with even more of a bluesy edge, this Texas roots cat blows a mean harp, writes some sharp songs, even if the social commentary doesn’t belong in a roadhouse setting and fuses up some serious gumbo of Texas sounds along the way.  Straight up and to the point musically, this disc gets the party started.

DAVE FIELDS/Time’s A Wastin’:  Shifting gears this time out to more of a blues bag, with help from some of the supporting Blues Brothers, Fields lets his versatility lead the way has he wears his real roots as a musical hit man to get the good times rolling here, blues style.  More of an old school craftsman than a technician, his knowledge of studio and music is almost like an extra player in his crew.  A change up from his last set but no less heady and enjoyable, this might well be the off  the beaten track good time you’ve been looking for.

McCAIN & CO.
PHIL KEAGGY/The Sing Within:  Did someone tell the ace guitar man he’s been over playing?  For his debut on a new label, he tones down the pyrotechnics to an almost Windham Hill level of populist minimalism with a touch of ECM thrown in for good measure.  Not that the master has abandoned his chops any, it seems like he wants to take his “message” to the masses, and there’s nothing wrong with that as sometimes you have to stray from masses to reach the masses.  Another high point in a career full of them, guitar fans will flock to this set just to hear the new sound being laid down since it’s such an unexpected change up that comes with a bunch of tasty changes.

TWO FOR THE SHOW MEDIA
ASAF SIRKIS & The Inner Noise/The Song Within:  This cat comes to New York from Israel only to find that he gets instant notice and awards for his work in England.  Some people should be glad the world is getting smaller.  Here’s an organ trio with a small but significant twist.  If you like the classic closing theme sound of “Saturday Night Live” with it’s churchy feel, even though that was more sax driven than organ, you will already be primed to dig this date that owes more to church organ than it does Hammond/Smith/McGriff etc organ.  A smart drummer that has his ear cocked toward the 50s in that he leans toward the jazz into classics sound, Sirkis has a sound and crew that you need to know.  A solid dose of music as art that doesn’t wear it’s artsiness on it’s sleeve.
