BONAVITA
DEBORAH SACHS/Pure Imagination: A jazzy lady with a knack for word play has a nice debut under her belt with this eclectic set that covers several bases and takes you around a few horns. Nicely engaging in an easy going way, it’s overall lightly swinging vibe is the kind of thing that helps make summer last a little longer than it’s 9/21 shelf date. Fun stuff that adds up to a nice find.

CROWS FEET PRODUCTIONS
ELLIS HOOKS/Another Saturday Morning: The pairing of Hooks and Jon Tiven has been an artistically fruitful one for both and maybe it’s time for the break out to happen as well. Originally discovered by Diana Ross but too freaked out to work with her, Hooks has been developing his retro soul Stax/Muscle Shoals thing into the real thing over the last few years with sets that have been attracting notice and high profile fans. Even more in the pocket than past efforts, this is crème of the crop neo soul. Pigeon hole him as the new Wilson Pickett et al if you have to, but he’s worked for the right to be recognized on his own. Blistering, killer stuff that is on the money throughout.

DB/Secret Art of Science 2-Then and Now: One of the leading drum and bass mixologists comes back after a loooong recording lay off to show that he and the sound are still in the game and the world being turned upside down in the interim isn’t going to stop the sound. Hard core New York club stuff that is just what the real fan has been waiting for.

G. G. ALLIN/Carnival of Excess: Chinga Chavin’s “Country Porn” was one thing, but Allin’s country via Rob Zombie via hell country date really takes it to the next level of the game. This is probably the kind of stuff someone like Johnny Paycheck would have been cutting if he didn’t have a commercial cat like Billy Sherrill behind him. This is an incredibly and wonderfully sick album that any malcontent should own proudly. It’s clear that Allin missed his calling by going hard core punk when his off the hook cowpunk thing is a thing of twisted beauty. You can just imaging this being cooked up in a meth lab in the hinterlands. Just imagine the turn insurgent country would have taken if he teamed up with Hank III. Priceless.
