BOSTON LEGAL season three: Ah, the trials and tribulations of Alan Shore, fresh from his Emmy win for best actor. The season was loaded with a bunch of cast comings and goings, hook ups and crashes and burns with equal parts drama between the sheets and in the court room. Everyone was in for their share of thrill and spills, mishaps and surprises. One of the better nutty ensemble dramedies around, season three was full of everyone getting their turn to be a pompous wind bag and their turn at getting deflated. With everyone having their fave character, the glue here pretty much seems to be James Spader who seems to be able to convey more with an arched eye brow than others can with all the method acting textbooks in the world. Fun stuff that you should know what you’re in for by now.

FAMILY GUY volume five: C’mon, it’s worth it just to see Lois in her dominatrix outfit again, even if it’s just for Stewie’s fantasy. This show continues to get more subversive as it goes along and it’s just a killer, not subtle laugh riot. With ADD pacing and non-stop jokes and non sequitur fires from all quarters, this is the show you need to watch if you like to laugh, as long as you don’t like to get your laughs from PBS. A dysfunctional family that somehow manages to stay together and keep going forward when by all rights they should have imploded long ago, the only kvetch here is they didn’t put the entire season under one cover. This is certainly a series worth owning simply because each repeated viewing brings out some nuttiness you didn’t see the last time around.

MEDIUM season three: Oy, poor Alison. She can see the future and see things no one else can, but this season was loaded with things she somehow didn’t see coming and it screwed up her family along the way. The fun aspect of this show is that it functions so well as a low key nailbiter. Just because she knows how things are going to turn out doesn’t mean they turn out the way she thinks they will and the people that rely on her wind up getting pissed. Certainly another fine dysfunctional family drama. This is one murder mystery series with enough pepper on the ball to keep going at this clip without jumping the shark for quite a while.
