HOT CUP
MOSTLY OTHER PEOPLE DO THE KILLING/Shamokin: A crew of jazzbos and rockers that have a great affinity for taking things too far do just that on their second set.  With a sense of humor that at once bold yet sly and understated, this crew of jazz for the next generation of disaffected college kid that really does like to party, even if they do it without smiling.  After everything is said and done, this foursome has about a million miles worth of chops between them and they know how to put them to fine use.  Fun stuff for those that like their jazz with a wink.

ROARK
EZRA WEISS/Get Happy: Super, young lion piano man tears the roof off the sucker with a set about happy, whether original or chestnut cover.  Rounding up a great cast for this big band set, there’s so much great jazz pouring out of New York, you almost don’t know where to start.  Under 30 and already a well decorated player, Weiss is one serious comer that well on his way.  A wildly tasty set that opens the ears in the most delightful way.

SUMMITT
PETE McGUINESS JAZZ ORCHESTRA/First Flight: After 20 years of solid trombone playing in New York with big bands ranging from Maria Schneider to Jimmy Heath, McGuiness decides it’s time to step out on his own and let’s the fur fly with his own swinging big band.  With considerable enough skill as a writer to keep you involved with material you don’t know, big band fans will be merrily tapping their toes to this brassy swinger.  Quite simply a grand time that works throughout with good vibes for all.

WJO PRODUCTIONS
WESTCHESTER JAZZ ORCHESTRA/All In: I know there’s still a bunch of great cats in the greater Woodstock area, but there’s a bunch of cool cats between downtown and the country lurking in the northern suburbs of the Apple.   Keeping big band music alive in fine style, this crew of first call cats get together on a regular basis to kick it out.  Not restricting themselves to jazzbo fodder and revisionist history, this crew has plenty on the ball.  A fine set for fans of contemporary big band that just want to sit back and really enjoy some killer chops on parade.
