KATIA ET MARIELLE LABEQUE/Stravinsky Debussy: The pianistic sisters go back to some ground they covered before and cover it with a new grace, style and maturity, as well as in an audio video manner. Tackling most of Stravinsky’s works for four hands on one piano, this is some sprightly and ginger work that is sure to open the most jaded ears. When coupled with a video work that tracks the sounds nicely, you have the Labeques showing just how forward they can look and deliver. Simply a luminous performance throughout, these 20 fingers are just getting a second wind and the next sprint is going to be a great one. Hot stuff.

MARTY EHRLICH-MYRA MELFORD/Spark: For those of you who love hanging out on the corner of art & jazz, these two formidable hitters join forces again for a forward thinking new jazz date that breaks ground in a lot of directions. Springing a subversive spiritual element to their new jazz, this duo play off each other’s textures and talents in such a way that you don’t mind being thought of as an art lover. With Ehrlich’s multi-wind instrument attack and Melford piano, each weaving around the other, the effect is a mind blowing stunner that can’t help but take over wide open ears looking for music with bite. Hot stuff from pros that know how to get it right.

STEVIE WONDER/#1’s: With Wonder working live and on record again, what is there to say about this 20 track, utterly luminescent collection, simply put of his #1’s? All gathered together from all phases of his career, it’s just like Eddie Murphy says in one of his set pieces when he’s in character, “Stevie Wonder is a musical genius”. I can’t top that. Check it out, especially if you need prompting from me.

WE ARE MARSHALL: Gripping adaptation of a tragic story with a happy ending in which the football team of a small town college gets wiped out and the replacements have to be whipped into shape to restore the lost glory. It could have been as turgid as a typical after-school special, but an action director that normally isn’t thought of as given to subtlety really makes his mark as a ‘grown up’ in helming this pic. McG knows just how to push the buttons and keep things from becoming cardboard and manipulative. It’s loaded with unexpected performances that will keep you involved and very interested. With a lot of football as a metaphor for life underpinnings, this inspirational pic will grab you as hard as “Brian’s Song” did once upon a time.
