IT’S ALIVE MEDIA
SLIGHTLY STOOPID/Chronchitis: Signed to Sublime’s label while still teens, they are now in their second decade of pleasing stoners across the country and selling out well below the radar again and again and again. With the mixmaster sound that the jam bands do so well, guests include hip cats from G. Love to Fishbone. Head music for the new generation, their parents probably wouldn’t want to admit they listened to something like this when they were young stoners. Fun stuff that was made for partying til the sun comes up and is a great soundtrack for letting the doobage waft.

MARK PUCCI MEDIA
HOPE WAITS: This is the name of a person, not the name of a shoegazer crew. With a name like that, and a cover of a Tom Waits song, I was thinking there was some relation, but other than seeming like the kid Waits and Rickie Lee Jones might have kept a secret for years, nada. Recorded by the first cat to record Norah Jones, Waits hits hard right out of the box with a later day beatnik informed set that is delightfully out of the ordinary. The backing crew makes this a first rate set from start to finish and makes you shake your head that it’s on an indie. This set is a wild ride and is almost an anti-Norah set for people that wanted to like her but just couldn’t find that handle to grab onto. Tasty, wise and everything you could want in an off beat, contemporary musical experience, this is just waiting for you to dive in to. Check it out.

PATTERSON BARRETT/I Must Be Dreaming: One of those heavy cats you never heard of because he chose to hang around Austin and raise his kids rather than hit the road finally takes his turn to step out. After years of working with Jerry Jeff Walker, Nanci Griffith, Gurf Morlix, Buddy & Julie Miller Lou Ann Barton and lots of others you like from the Americana realm, this is tasty work out that includes several of the above as well as a reunion with high school sweetie, Deborah Holland. A delightfully heartfelt and beautiful set that has been way to long in the making, this is a must for Americana fans who are certain to flip out at discovering an important missing link.

NEW EARTH
DECHEN SHAK-DAGSAY/Compassion: Some stuff is part of a genre, some stuff defines a genre. The daughter of a Tibetan lama and a friend of Dalai Lama, Shak-Dagsay knows how to deliver a Tibetan chant from the heart. Very much a perfect set for yoga and spiritual moments, the vocalist is accompanied by some very subtle but soulful music that weaves itself through the material but let’s you know it’s there. Certainly not the kind of stuff for everyone, but for people into spiritual music, this is something they will play a lot. A very beautiful mediational music set that has a lot on the ball.

PADMA PREVI/Divine Visions: The funny thing is, when we think of urban music, we think of something that feels like New York. Urban music for Previ was inspired by her first visit to Mumbai which moved her to fuse traditional Indian sounds with the contemporary sounds of the streets adding sensual elements to mediational music much in the tradition of 14 th century monks whose devotional music had some pretty sexy elements. Driven by Sanskrit mantras, this yoga infused set is fine for chanting and sexy times with art chicks. Deep, world music that has some practical applications, all of which involve movement of sorts.
