SMALL TOWN GAY BAR: When I lived in the country, I don’t think there were any gay bars. The outlet for gay kids finding themselves was to go to the midnight screening of “Rocky Horror” in the nearest “big” city or college town. Things are changing as this Kevin Smith exec produced pic focuses on two gay bars in Elvis’ old neighborhood. With a bunch of the Smith gang involved, you can bet this festival fave is more view askew than strident docu. Showing there’s more to entertainment in the stix than strip bars, this look at alternative lifestyles where such tings aren’t really tolerated is a nice eye opener for thinking people. Just when you thought everyone that wants their rights has them…

THE BANGLES/Return to Bangleonia (Live in Concert): Concert pic of the original line up’s comeback/return for a 2000 concert in which they gave their hits an overhaul for the new times. With the energy restored that was gone when they drifted apart, this set is released to coincide with a current reunion tour that hopefully will find them in the form they have on this disc. A live greatest hits that kicks it out in fine form, these punks turned poppers could rock with a lot of fun in the groove.

TAXI DRIVER: The Scorsese/DeNiro parlay has some mighty deep roots and they were both angry, young man when this 1976 pic scooped up a handful of Academy Award nominations and really set their partnership in motion. A contemporary classic tale of a descent into madness by way of isolation, it’s still bloody, tense, gripping and mind blowing. As desensitized as we’ve become in the last 30 years, this pic can still do a first class job of rattling your cage. A great hold over from a not too distant time when you weren’t too pretentious if you told people you went to the cinema to see films.

SUPER FRIENDS The Legendary Super Powers Show (The Complete Series): There was a time when Hannah Barbera got into the act and took a crack at the DC superheroes gang as a toy tie in for ABC. There were only 16 10 minute episodes to the series and they are all on display here. A fine addition for the DC collector that wants to make sure there’s no holes in his collection.
