GO MEDIA
MACHAN/Motion of Love: Machan is in an interesting place.  She’s sold a bajillion records vocalizing with all the key acts of the time, almost with genre never being an issue, and you still might not know who she is.  No matter, she uses this freedom wisely to create a tasty adult jazz vocal set on her own terms.  With a backing crew that doesn’t need to hit the studio for a paycheck, Machan crafts and weaves a personal set that really reaches out and touches you.  The lyrical emotions might be expressed in universal terms, but she knows how to hit the core that everyone feels to make it feel like she’s personally zinged your own target.  Over all, it’s one of those sets you can’t stop playing once it gets in your ear a few times.  Hot stuff.

LOTOS NILE
DERAILERS/Under the Influence of Buck: There’s been a lot of attention to the Buck Owens legacy since he passed last year, whether in weighty reissues or reissues of music from his universe like Buddy Alan or the Buckaroos.  The Derailers are the first to get their hat in the tribute ring and it looks like this is going to be a hard set to beat for any comers in it’s wake.  A crisp retelling of 13 of his hits, with the key ones that appeal to everyone covered, Brain Hofeldt and his posse have it down perfectly.  Capturing Owens’ verve and swerve more than anything, if you were a casual Owens fan, this is sure to grab your attention, if you were more of a fan, this sounds like a love letter that you’ll really enjoy.  Straight from the heart and right to your ear, this is genuine hot stuff.

MCG JAZZ
BILLY TAYLOR & GERRY MULLIGAN/Live at MCG: Originally recorded as a special event a few years before Mulligan died, this was the first time the old jazz pals shared a bandstand together.  Working with Taylor’s trio bringing up the rear, the jazz great shines in this setting as he and Taylor tear it up on the classics but toss in a few eyes toward the future as well.  Originally recorded in 1993, it’s easily one of those you should have been there dates that might not be a great record/record but certainly is great music.  Any unreleased Mulligan is cause for celebration at this jazz juncture.

NEW YORK VOICES/A Day Like This: Typically known as retro cats, the Voices are adding some more recent vintage works to their songbag.  Of course, these recent cuts are from 40 years ago, so don’t go thinking they are trashing their vibe. Adding some colorful instrumental pals to the mix as well, they are broadening their generally broad pallette in ways to keep them contemporary and competitive without diluting what they are really about, the great blending of four voices that really tickle your ear.  In the mode of Singers Unlimited and other classic vocal groups, NYV continue to deliver the goods as well as grow as they continue to delight.  Tasty throughout.
