UNIVERSAL MUSIC ENTERPRISES
STEELY DAN/20th Century Masters: Face it boomers, saying Steely Dan to a kid is like saying Glenn Miller to you and time and tide has swept these hipsters into the midline realm.  With 10 no fat, remastered tracks, this is a basic primer on Dan that will serve as a primo entree for the uninitiated.
(Geffen)

STAN GETZ/20th Century Masters: You get a pretty well balanced, remastered around the horn look at Getz’s Verve years with the tracks pretty well split between the bossa nova sides and the lyrical, straight ahead sides taking him right into the Jimmy Webb years.  One of the all time sax greats, this set serves as either a dandy reminder or introduction.
(Verve)

NINA SIMONE/20th Century Masters: There’s a lot of remastered, reissued Simone floating around lately, so if you like her, you have your choice of what to grab.  Ending up with “My Baby Just Cares for Me”, her most recognized cut from this period, a lot of people still feel she can be an acquired tastes that you either feel passionate or meh about.  A well stacked set if you are on the passionate side.
(Verve)

SPYRO GYRA/20th Century Masters: Having spent the better part of their career somewhere under the Universal umbrella, there’s a lot to pull from in picking the 11 tracks that made the cut here.  Defining smooth jazz, they were crossover before anyone knew what it was.  A nice look back at a fun, jazz career, this sweet little set follows the crew through the changes and makes it all come out right.

DVD SUPPLEMENT
GO MEDIA
THIS IS TOM JONES: There was a time when moms that were too old for Jimi Hendrix but too young for Glenn Miller would clear off the Thursday night dinner dishes, pour some wine and settle in with Tom Jones’ ABC variety show.  An anomaly for the times in that it was hip enough for the kids but it struck the right kitsch chord with the unsung desires of the silent majority, Jones was the prime slice of horny, housewife helper mixing guests like Janis Joplin with Mirriele Mattue.  This collection has 45 performances pulled from the hipper side of the ledger.  If you’re the right age, your mom will really dig this.

WARNER HOME VIDEO
ASTRONAUT FARMER: In which we find Billy Bob Thornton offering a space version of “Field of Dreams” where he’s sure that if he builds it, it will fly.  Maybe hokey on paper, but it’s a nice family pic in execution that you can gather the gang for when you want to have some family time with something you can enjoy together that won’t make waves.  Well plotted in a movie/movie kind of way, it’s a nice piece of showmanship that passes the time in an entertaining way.  Not necessarily a spiritual pic but one that will leave you with that feeling that all is right with the world, for a while.
