BLUE NOTE
BILL CHARLAP TRIO/Live at the Village Vanguard: Charlap has the chops, smarts and background to be a progressive, jazz historian and when he brings all the background to bear as he dances across the keys, it’s a wonder to behold. Kicking it out live on a set heavy on chestnuts refreshed in his hands, Charlap’s work sparkles in your ear and let’s you revel in deceptively simple joys. It’s a tasty jazz piano trio date in the classic mold that’s anything but moldy.

KEREN ANN: The alternative Norah Jones stakes her territory in the romantic disillusionment that comes with coming of age up in the big city and finding out sooner than later that you aren’t the one that’s going to beat the system. College girls and recent grads have a new soundtrack for Saturday night fits of Haagen Dasz therapy.

JOE LOVANO & HANK JONES/Kids: Sax/piano duo by two stone cold aces. If Jones was playing solo kalimba, it would be worth showing up for. Spurring each other on to take this to new heights, you are in for an intimate good time where all you can do is let the pros take the wheel and show how they can do so much with seemingly so little. Hot stuff.

LOVE/Blue Thumb Recordings: Hendrix and all things Hendrix related never go out of style. With madman Lee’s recent passing, it time to raid the Blue Thumb vaults for the sides that came in the wake of his Elektra classics and get them some due spotlight of their own. Rounding out the package to make it an event for fans is a previously unreleased concert where you get Love in full force. A limited edition collection, this is acid rock that was meant to fry your brain. Even if it didn’t have the impact of the Elektra sides, don’t underestimate it’s import. A killer 3D postcard from an era that can never be recaptured except in amber.

SAM YAHEL TRIO/Truth & Beauty: His licks have powered some of the few records that have been big sellers lately. In addition to that, this up and coming B3 hitter has played with everyone and is friends with everyone making his distinctive sound a first call button on the speed dialers of all of those in the know. On his latest, he’s hanging out with Joshua Redman and Brian Blade and simply tearing it up. A killer date for any organ fan and certainly for hot lick loving jazzbos, we have a cat here to rally around that has simply raised the bar once again.
