RED CAT PUBLICITY
ALAN FERBER NONTET/Compass: A trombone player on a mission, Ferber has played everywhere with everyone in the last ten years and has the chops to back it all up. He brings a great energy to big band sessions and seems to be well on track to be a long lasting jazz MVP. This tasty set is full of the kind of vim and vigor you want from a swinging cat who plays like he’s thinking ahead but is ready to turn on a dime. Crack open the plastic wrap only if you are in the mood to be impressed by a cat you should make a point of knowing.

CADY FINLAYSON/Irish Coffee: American Celtic fiddler Finlayson keeps right on the money with her latest set. When working with a largely traditional repertoire, it’s often hard to break new ground, but Finlayson does it by keeping her chops in top form and adding the colors of new and different players to keep her raising her game. Very much a sassy, full bodied set, contemporary takes on traditional Irish music hasn’t sounded this sprightly in quite some time. Certainly a music to check out if this is your flavor of world beat.

TWO FOR THE SHOW MEDIA
TANYA KALMANOVITCH-MYRA MELFORD/Heart Mountain: Sometimes you come across musicians that are pure and simply artists and they have to be accorded their space as such. This duo plays from a place you will never come across on “American Idol”. Just two players, improvising, and making an artistic statement so deep and rich that you’ll get it right away, but you will appreciate it more with each repeated listening. Beyond jazz, beyond classical, this music for the very serious listener that never really knew there was more to Tower stores than the classical section. Simply amazing adult music that knows no other boundary.

WORLDISC
SI, PARA USTED-Funky Beats of Revolutionary Cuba/various: Here’s a nutty world beat collection, funk recorded under Castro’s nose that is finally getting better treatment than being released on pancake batter vinyl. Remastered from the original tapes, this is prime 70’s funk by bands you know like Los Van Van and Irakere, and a bunch you don’t that have influenced the sounds that have been escaping in recent years. A hot and heavy set that just doesn’t quit, this is more than vacation music, this is hard hitting stuff from souls yearning to be free and escaping via music. Wild stuff that’s sure to open your ears, especially if you are a real believer in the funk!
