PALMETTO
FRED HERSCH TRIO/Night & the Music: With all the music Hersch puts out, it’s hard to believe this is his first recorded trio date in ten years.  Played like a straight up classic jazzbo piano trio, with a lot of impressive pieces played in fine style, this is simply a great date for piano trio fans.  Crisp, pro playing that never lets you down, Hersch is right on the money as usual.  Hot stuff.

SO MUCH MOORE
TODD FRITSCH/Sawdust: Not only is he growing as a pre-eminent honky tonker, he’s got a duet with Gary P. Nunn here and if that doesn’t make you a Texas party band, nothing ever will.  A big, bright, bold bouncy party record that was made for backing up brisket, lettuce wedges and blue cheese.  What else is there to say other than put this on and have a Texas sized good time.

UNIVERSAL MUSIC ENTERPRISES
BO DIDDLEY/Definitive Collection: This late in the game, there’s probably still a few people that don’t have a Bo Diddley collection, and I’ll let you in on a secret, this has the best mastering yet and you can listen to it all the way through without it hurting your ears after a while.  Loaded with the basic rock beat, it can get a little rough after a while but the new sound depth lets you rock, hard.  All the classics that made Chess a powerhouse are here, and this is the place where four on the floor was invented.   Be sure to check it out.

DVD SUPPLEMENT
PARAMOUNT
FRASIER-Ninth Season: Oy, even the most award winning show in the history of television has to jump the shark sometime, and season nine was when “Frasier” had it’s aerobics, even f Frasier and Roz finally went to bed together and Niles and Daphne made plans to move in together and get married.  It jumped the shark because it had the highest quote of bad and go-nowhere episodes, but even bad Frasier rocks as half the episodes were winners up to the series usual standards.  If you’ve been collecting the series this far, you have to go for it, there’s only one season left in the can.

OFFICER & A GENTLEMAN special collectors edition: It might be one of the essential chick pics of contemporary times, but across the board, it has gotten better with age.  Lou Gossett’s award wining performance seems richer, you appreciate Taylor Hackford’s direction even more and Richard Gere doesn’t seem as callow as he did 25 years ago.  Maybe this pic seems better because the values it represents have faded even farther from view with time and it seems like we need them more.   The special edition additions give it that little extra oomph that should motive late adapters to add it to their dvd collections.
