JERRY GRANELLI V16/Sonic Temple: It might be a long way since he did “Charlie Brown Christmas” but the jazz drummer continues to move forward. This recording showcases two nights of recording, playing the same set in the same order but showing how the music evolves in an organic way as it gets played. Part experiment and part exercise, Granelli and his crew play as one giving creative music an extra dimension. Presented in SACD, there’s a lot going on here for the serious listener that has a taste for some fusion meant to be feasted on.

DARRELL GRANT/Truth & Reconciliation: Double disc jazz vocal outing rounds up some serious progressive players for a set that mixes jazz, art, politics and more. The kind of set someone like Goddard Lieberson might subsidize in the past, this is now firmly the kind of indy set that has to be indie all the way. It takes a special taste to appreciate great music backed with deep meaning but anyone in the mood for something juicy along those lines will find their ears greatly fulfilled.

UNIVERSAL MUSIC ENTERPRISES
60’s SOUL #1s/various (8643); 70’s SOUL #1s/various (8602); 80’s SOUL #1s/various (8625); 90’s SOUL #1s/various (8685) : Four undisputedly heavy compilations loaded to the gills with songs you probably have in one form or another. If you’re a veteran collector, why do you need this collection? The remastering. You care going to hear things in the grooves that you never heard before. If you are a newbie, your collecting needs here are obvious. The companies Universal has acquired over the years are a most wonderful repository of some of the most wonderful soul music of all time. A dead solid, no fat collection of chart topping hits from Motown, Chess, Stax, Casablanca, ABC, A&M, Mercury, Polydor, MCA, Geffen, Island, Interscope, Def Jam and everyone else under this roof. It’s a killer on two individually available platters.
LOVE SONGS #1s/various: From Captain & Tennille to UB40, there’s 40 years worth of great love songs packed in these 18 selections. There’s plenty of room for people to bitch their song isn’t here, but where you are living and dying on only what hit #1, the bitching gets limited. A nicely stacked, across the board hit collection with a little something for everyone and a lot of something almost everyone can agree on.
