HOWLIN WUELF MEDIA
DANIEL AGUST/Swallowed a Star: Somewhere in the gulf that defines twee and chick music ala “Grey’s Anatomy” soundtracks, comes Agust, former driver of Iceland’s Gus Gus now charting a different course for the new century.  Ditching a lot fo the electronics that were Gus Gus, Agust drifts toward a more organic side delivered a solid set of girl friend music that most guys won’t cotton to unless they dug Nick Drake and the sounds that flowed in his wake.  Affecting singer/songwriter stuff that doesn’t have the suicidal edge of early Leonard Cohen, this has all the marks of an under the radar college hit that goes well with pints of Haagen Dazs.
463 (One Little Indian)

NOAH GEORGESON/Find Shelter: Georgeson is quickly becoming the underground go to guy via displaying the versatility to produce a ‘comeback’ set by Bert Jansch and be Joanna Newsome’s fellow traveler.  This set was put together while producing Newsome’s break through set and Georgeson retains much ore of his own identity than say, Lee Alexander, another players whose work is wrapped up in the work of his much larger significant other.  With an underpinning of the cantankerousness of his desert upbringing, Georgeson is an uncompromising left fielder that might not be a taste everyone can enjoy but will inspire rabid cults on the order of people he admires or has roped into working with him (think Van Dyke Parks, Lee Hazelwood etc acts there are sure to be ample comparisons to).  If you don’t mind making the effort to penetrate his walls, this singer/songwriter styled set will offer great rewards.

JOHN PLATANIA/Blues Waltzes & Badland Borders: The Woodstock guitarist that has seen the world from behind some of rock’s greats over the last 35 years finally, at long last, gets to step up with his own solo record.  He hasn’t been whistling in the dark all these years as this indie record has some guests on it that you practically can’t get to drop by for any price.  Structured as a tour de force through Texas, Platania is too far along to worry about expanding his reputation, but if he’s concerned about leaving some great music and great art in his wake, in how own name, this is certainly the start of something big.  A bold, tasty and tasteful listening set that should great his rightful place among the other roots guitar gods.  A solid winner throughout.
25 (Train Wreck)

KENDEL CARSON/Rearview Mirror Tears: Chip Taylor knows a secret and you don’t.  He knows how to find hot young fiddlers that have so much on the ball that you think lightening can’t be caught in a bottle again.  Damn if he hasn’t found the fount from here these things flow.  Following in the footsteps of Carrie Rodriguez comes Carson, from another end of the continent but with no less impressive chops.  A sterling debut for ears that follow music rather than fashion, Carson is sure to have her talents work her magic on you in much the same way Rodriguez did, but different.  Prepare to have your ears opened in a very nice way.
