KOCH
BADEN POWELL/Memories: Sure, Jobim rolls off everyone’s tongue when it comes to Brazilian music, but Powell is one of the also acknowledged masters when it comes to the art and art form and anyone that digs a little deeper than the average gringo knows this. A tasty look at Powell’s works is on board here and it’s a great addition to DRG’s Brazilian music series. A true master that seemingly never hits a false note, this is a wonderful collection from the heart of Brazil that deserves wider attention from any one that really wants to know more about the musical wonders that abound down there.

KINKS/Celluloid Heroes: Koch keeps the Kinks katalog koming and brinking out another set from deep in their kanon for their krew of fans that will dig remastered reissues. Going deep for another reach back, this is another one from the RCA years when they were kontroversial among their fans but kept true to themselves. Whether these are classics outside the Kink real is a moot debate. If you are a fan, this is some hot stuff from the golden period before they “sold out” with stuff like “Come Dancing”, and you certainly know the drill.

NELSON-HAGGARD-PRICE/Last of the Breed: Because you never know what to expect from a Willie Nelson album anymore, the Border’s sampler was an appetite whetting godsend for fans that wanted to believe. Nelson is at his best when he simply doesn’t give a hang and does what he wants. Reuniting with Ray Price, who is an elder statesman to Nelson, and contemporary pal Haggard, these three old pros that still remember honky tonk and swing simply step up to the mic and deliver the goods. Unpretentious and unadorned, young whippersnappers might want to check this out just to get a taste of what real music by real musos is about and how it’s done right. Double cd that doesn’t wear out it’s welcome and could have gone longer for my money, this is pure country the way ti sounded before George Jones declared that CMA stood for “Country My Ass”. A stone cold winner throughout.
