HOWLIN WUELF MEDIA
HOOTS & HELLMOUTH: A rocking revival meeting from hell with more Memphis than deep south in it’s southern rock, this is certainly for people that like the raucousness of Big & Rich but think they are too commercial and want something that really is down and dirty while being over the top. Crazy, energetic stuff that always wild and wooly and ready to kick your ass.

ANDREW LIPKE/The Way Home: If you were wondering just how it would sound if a student run label got their hands on John Meyer and produced him the way they think he should be produced (with an accomplished hand in the background), this is pretty much what you would get. Filled with college kid recklessness and ambivalence for the man with the need to show him how to do things right (their version), this is certainly a more immediate way to get laid than many others. And that’s how it sounds.

JAZZ PROMO SERVICES
SCOTT TINKLER/Backwards: Those Aussies are tipping the Fosters a touch too much again. A first call trumpet player makes a solo set in one take that he wanted to make as improvised as possible despite needing a bunch of preparation. A lot like those free jazz basement recordings from the 60’s, you really have to be into the art of the player to want to sit and listen to this. Tinkler is up to the task but it’s just going to feel too arty for most to deal with.

ROCK PAPER SCISSORS
SLAVIC SOUL PARTY/Teknochek Collision: A bunch of New York downtown jazzbos dig the Balkan brass sound and decide to make it brassier. With a set that leans heavily on traditional material that has been turned around, Matt Moran and his pals out do bass thumpers that make windows rattle as they drive around with this bone shaking thunder that is solid party music at it’s core. Long a subgenre of party music that keeps demanding it’s own moment in the sun, this moment finds it enjoying a new day that invites all to the party. Fun stuff throughout.

TWO FOR THE SHOW MEDIA
DAVID BINNEY & EDWARD SIMON/Oceanos: Here’s a tasty downtown recording that doesn’t wear it on it’s sleeve. With the core duo rounded out by two fellow travelers and guests that now the route well a well, this is an intense jazz outing that doesn’t leave you worn out by it’s intensity. Calling it original is taking the easy way out. The sax/piano interplay between the two leaders is something you want to hear much more of and the vibes that flows in their original compositions makes you think they could finish each other’s sentences. Something new and tasty that works throughout.
