AMY DUNCAN/Pilgrimage: Could we have a Scots Tori Amos on our hands? Discovered from her MySpace page, the vet Scots lass has been in classics and pop but finds pop more fulfilling an dis prepared to take her place in the line of culty, introspective songwritresses that descended from the left side of Joni Mitchell. They might not always hit the target or the mainstream but they have something to say that really grabs hold with a cult. Coming across as sincere as opposed to riding a wave, Duncan doesn’t disappoint folk leaning tastes.

FRATELLIS/Costello Music: Three cheeky mates from Glasgow just like being off the wall and make it pay. Breaking out from an Ipod commercial, this vaudeville/hippie/music hall/rockers like cheesy John Willie meets Gil Elvgren style cover art, singing about crazy ladies and make the kind of off beat sounds that there’s no room on radio for anymore that seem to show there is an appetite for. Leaving the message music to the tubthumpers, they may be musical cotton candy but they certainly know how to put on a good carnival. Randy rock there’s a real need for that could easily be the sound of the summer.

BLACKTOP MOURNING/No Regret: Say what you will about him but Adam Duritz is putting his money where his mouth is for starting a label to put out a Chicago pop/punk band that’s been bubbling under ala MTV placements, MySpace hits and hometown radio. Still in their teens, they have the sound that could easily get them in the middle of all ind of corruption and decadence that could only be the envy of all their friends. Well crafted young music for young tastes, the next generation of the underground is making it’s move.

SKULL TIME: Crunchy hard rockers out of Milwaukee are looking to rock the town to bits and finally rock their way out. They’ve been gestating their sound, adding fury and show the rust belt sound is still a powerful motivator to kids. Hard hitting, hard rocking, hard all the way around, this is a real underground sound looking to break out and eat your young (or something dramatic like that). Check it out.

PROTEST HILL/The City Echoes Our Hearts: Spin off crew of System and Station, the prime mover and lone mainstay fo the band had some dark material that didn’t fit in with the band oeuvre, even if he was the only one that could call the shots. With more heartland blues that you would find in an S&S set, this strikes a different chord for when you really want to get moody and are proud of it. A solid soundtrack for a buzz when you aren’t seeing the world through rose colored glasses.
