GORGEOUS PR
BRENTLY HEILBRON/Phantom Parade of Love: DIY punk ethos comes to comedy where an Amoeba Records comedy clerk is trying to shed his day job and spend his time as a ful time comic.  Already on Comedy Central and making a rep for himself by airing his short films on MySpace, Heilbron is honing his art in the new vaudeville type arenas where material is eaten through like a tree chipper doing it’s thing and you will be forgotten if you aren’t in the moment.  He’s got the tough elbows to be up for the task.  Funny, contemporary humor that is on target and always played for laughs above all else.  This dandy debut is one more trick in his kit bag that should help him go the distance.

JAZZ PROMO SERVICES
TAB ROBINSON/New Point of View: Willie Henderson’s been saying he was going to come off the bench for a while and now he has with this bluesy white boy that has nabbed a few Handy noms and is certainly on the way to winning one soon.  Making the most of the old school production techniques at this disposal, Robinson doesn’t seem like that suburban wannabe that spends his weekends playing frat parties just for the adrenaline high of it all.  This serious cat might look like Bruce Willis as Bruno, but posing and poseuing just isn’t in the DNA here.  Delightfully rousing blues/soul date that really hits the mark.

KARI ON PRODUCTIONS
JEFF ALKIRE/One Summer in Winters: Alto sax man does an interesting under the radar thing here.  Inspired by nature form the other direction than Paul Winter was, Alkire played for deer when living out in the country and found he struck a chord with them.  Then he called all his pals who have “played with” on their resumes and let the good times flow.  Inspired music by a bunch of cats who live their lives at the side of the stage or the corner of the recording studio is the result.  A very heartfelt work, this is the kind of work you get when players play because they have to, in a good way.

JOSE DUQUE’S ZUMBATES/Far Away: Progressive jazz by way of Venezuela and detoured through France is the vibe that propels the work of this South American drummer that has the world at his fingertips.  The kind of jazz that seems right at home on the dance floor, this is party music for people that want more than booty tracks to groove to.  With a upbeat vibe that just keeps coming, the emotional playing here reaches out and grabs you making you stay til the end of the party.  Fun stuff that opens the ears.

ROCK PAPER SCISSORS
MARIZA/Concerto em Lisboa: In the span of five years, Mariza has become the Celine Dion of fado and now that she has conquered the Portugal music scene, it looks like she’s set her sights on the world.  With a bonus disc that’s a docu about fado, the worldwide assault is on.  Warming to the occasion, Mariza is like the tropicalistas in Brazil in th early 60’s, full of freshness and taking things to new limits and breaking them.  A new curve ball for world beat fans, this is some tasty stuff that might not have a mainstream break through here but is sure to be one of those bubbling under things that everyone knows about.
